Q&A with Rock Valley Commit Landon Lassahn

By: Josh Fields
Wisconsin Staff

RHP Landon Lassahn (Verona Area) is a projectable 6-foot-3 right-hander with advanced stuff and feel to spin multple upside pitches. The fastball plays with life and carry and has the potential to continue to get swing and miss in the zone at the next level with two bigger action breaking balls that play in and out of the zone.

We recently had the chance to talk to Landon's about his recruitment process, along with some other fun topics, below.

Our Q&A

Prep Baseball: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Landon: My expectations for the recruitment process were to find the best fitting school for me to be able get to the next level and find a group of staff that had full belief in me and were excited to work with me. I was looking for a program that would be able to take what I knew then expand on it, as well as be able to develop my knowledge and skills of the game. I also knew that I needed a college that would get me more prepared physically to play at a higher level.

PB: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

L: Some of my favorite factors about the program I chose were the location, quality of the campus, recent success, the tools I needed to get further were all there and the personal connection I had built with the coaches over such a short time.

PB: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

L: Doing the work outside of designated practice times is very important. It’s not when you work it’s how you work. Get in the weight room as much as possible and really build up your tool(s)

PB: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

L: Yes; being close enough to home to be able to see my family and friends but also being able to still have the freedom to live on my own was important in my decision.

PB: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

L: The recruitment process really picked up for me during the summer I ended my high school season with only 3-4 schools really talking to me but that changed the deeper into summer I got. Rock Valley first saw me play at one of my summer ball tournaments in Iowa and had been following me since my PBR showcase in the early spring.

PB: Was there a particular Prep Baseball tournament or showcase that helped accelerate your recruiting process? If yes, how so?

L: I think that the Madison Spring ID accelerated my recruitment process a lot because before that I was kinda hidden from a lot of schools and PBR. After that I ended up moving up over 100 spots in the rankings which gave me a ton of attention from new schools.

PB: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

L: MATC and Southeastern CC

PB: If you could steal any tool or quality from another player in the state, what would it be and who would it be from?

L: Dominic Santarelli is definitely the best player I've faced in the state. He’s such a tough opponent because of his power along with his bat to ball skills, it makes it super hard to pitch to him.

PB: Who is the next talented young player to keep an eye on out of your high school or travel program?

L: The next talented young players to keep an eye on are Oliver Heckelsmiller who’s my catcher at Verona Area high school and Ethan Forrett a RHP from Janesville Craig.

PB: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

L: I think I really realized I could do it during my Sophomore year when I grew into my body a bit and started seeing some big jumps and that just continued the better I got and definitely motivated me to keep pushing myself.

PB: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

L: I think the most memorable moment of my baseball career is getting my first varsity start and win and being able to have fun with my teammates.

PB: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

L: I think Verona is gonna be a really underrated team that could definitely get hot at the right time this year. I think we've got a lot of great players returning who've only gotten better since last season. We're gonna have to replace some of the great pitching we had last year but I think we can fill that and complement our pitching with a much more productive offense this spring.
