Super 60: Illinois Takeaways

By: Peter Hamot
Assistant Scouting Director, Illinois & Wisconsin

This past Sunday, our entire company traveled to McCook, IL for the nation's best winter pre-draft showcase, the Super 60. This event started over 20 years ago with just Illinois and a couple neighboring states, and has since evolved into a culmination of the nation's best high school seniors all performing in front of 100+ MLB scouts.

This year there were four Illinois products that participated, and we wanted to take the time to talk about each of their workouts, found below.

Super 60 Takeaways

Scouting Report

2/01/26

+ OF Dominic Battista (IL, Illinois-Chicago recruit) Trim, athletic 6-foot, 177-pound frame, rounded shoulders with blossoming strength and power, premium athlete. True centerfield profile, advanced instincts and range with a quick first step, premium speed helps boost the profile (6.52 60-time). Took an impressive round of defense Sunday with fluid, natural actions to pair with soft hands, hips are athletic and flexible, allowing him to change direction easily. Arm plays with life and above-average strength, full circle out of the glove into a loose, high ¾ release (T93 mph). The bat continues to trend in the right direction, putting together one of the more impressive rounds of the day while breaking the previous Super 60 average EV record with 104.1 mph. Controlled load and coil into his forward move, loose hands with length through the zone while staying on-plane, hips fire through impact. Power continues to become more and more prevalent - controls the barrel well with the ability to lift the baseball to the big parts of the field, controlled aggression in the swing. He’s long been able to bunt for a hit and shoot the gaps for doubles, but the power he is starting to show only makes him more intriguing as he’s primed for a big spring. 60-yard dash (30 yd. split): 6.53 (3.70) Max Exit (avg.): 108.5 (104.1) Max Distance: 413’ OF Velocity: 93

Scouting Report

+ 1B Anthony Chavez (IL, Illinois recruit) 6-foot-3, 215-pound frame, proportionate with present strength, long-levered with more room to continue to add muscle throughout, impressive athlete for his size and profile. A recent standout from the Illinois ProCase, Chavez continues to raise his stock as one of the more polished left-handed hitters in the Midwest. Simple left-handed setup with a wide base, hangs foot with a controlled forward move and long stride, creates a stretch and hand separation into footstrike. Drops the head with accuracy and heaviness, natural ability to lift and control the barrel, has long been a performer for our staff in-game. Gained confidence as he went in his rounds of BP, settling into his second round with consistent loud contact to the big parts of the field. Natural defender at first base with clear feel for the position, fluid footwork with awareness around the bag, soft hands and athletic actions stand out. Also a 6.68 runner, Chavez likely will be able to make the shift to the outfield if needed. Exciting left-handed hitter that continues to make strides as a bat and overall athlete. 60-yard dash (30 yd. split): 6.68 (3.75) Max Exit (avg.): 108.3 (101.6) Max Distance: 417’

+ 3B TJ McQuillan (IL, Wake Forest recruit) 6-foot, 215-pound frame, wide clotheshanger shoulders, present lean strength throughout and in the legs. Big power profile in the left-handed bat, wide base with a quiet knee-knock stride, controlled mover and subtle hand load. Longer, flat path through the zone with a heavy barrel, gets to his power easily. Impressive hand-speed (24.3 mph avg) and rotational acceleration (27 G) in his round, also averaged 75 mph for his bat-speed. Did not participate in the defensive portion Sunday but profiles on the corner of the infield. Middle of the order type bat at the next level. Max Exit (avg.): 105.5 (93.7) Max Distance: 380’

Scouting Report

2/01/26

+ Caleb Cox (IL, Northern Illinois recruit)

FB: 91-93.9 (2024 rpm avg.)
CB: 75-77.4 (1994 rpm max)
CH: 82-83 (1564 rpm avg.)
SPLT: 78-81.5 (1276 rpm avg.)

6-foot-5, 198-pound frame, high-waisted, long-limbed with all sorts of room to continue to add strength, highly projectable. Cox earned an invite to the Super 60 after his loud showing at the Illinois ProCase earlier in the week and he did not disappoint. Working from the third base side of the rubber, the tall right-hander has a loose, long-levered operation that works into a high leg-kick, slight drop/drive lower-half that works in-line with some pace from balance point, lands square, gets down the mound well with quality extension. Loose and whippy arm, creates layback at footstrike before coming through with a ¾ slot, full circle out of the glove and in the back. The fastball has exploding life out of the hand, playing with some ride/run through the zone with finish, should only continue to see the velocity rise in the coming years. Curveball flashed sharp bite despite a lower spin rate, playing with shorter 11/5 shape in this look, backed up on him at times. Splitter flashed above-average though the feel was spotty, playing with late dive and drop at times, could be a quality offering with improved control. The changeup is a serviceable option with mostly straight action, flashed feel around the zone, maintains arm-speed on the offering and kills spin. Cox is a low mileage arm with an extremely high ceiling and his best days still ahead of him. There’s certainly some rawness to him, but when he’s synced up you really get a glimpse as to how special he can be.
