Alabama Scouting Director

As Opening Day approaches and the Alabama high school baseball season moves into focus, attention naturally shifts toward how each classification is shaping up entering the spring. Across the state, programs are preparing to turn the page from the offseason to the grind of a new year, with returning experience, roster turnover, and postseason expectations all factoring into the early landscape.

Each classification presents its own identity and challenges, from deep fields loaded with proven contenders to wide-open races featuring emerging programs ready to take the next step. Some teams enter the season with championship expectations firmly in place, while others carry momentum from strong finishes a year ago or look to capitalize on growth made over the winter.

In this class-by-class breakdown, we take a closer look at the landscape within the classification, highlighting the top teams, impact talent, and notworthy storylines to follow heading into first pitch. This breakdown examines the classification from top to bottom, evaluating the teams in position to contend, the depth behind them, and how the race could unfold as the season gets underway.

Others on the Bubble

Calera
Calera enters the 2026 season after one of the more surprising postseason runs in Class 6A a year ago, finishing 21-17 and reaching the Elite Eight while pushing Chelsea to a decisive Game 3 in the series. While the Eagles did graduate several senior contributors from that group, they still bring back important pieces from last spring’s run. Kegan Johnson, last year’s leadoff hitter as a freshman and a talented multi-sport athlete, returns as a key catalyst, joined by David Gutierrez and Parker Breeding, who were everyday starters. With some newcomers needing to step into expanded roles, Calera will look to build on that momentum and remain a factor in Class 6A this spring.

Cullman
Cullman enters the 2026 season as one of the more storied programs in Class 6A under head coach Brent Patterson and is, once again, a team to watch as the spring unfolds. The Bearcats reached the Sweet 16 a year ago and have their sights set on pushing deeper into the postseason, a familiar goal for a program that owns five state championships and seven state runner-up finishes. While they did graduate key arms and much of the top of the order from last season, several important pieces return, including Carson Stancil, Jonah Inman (Northwest Shoals CC), Tyler Brock, Knox Mauldin, and Case Edwards, all of whom were starters a year ago. Michael Shadeck is another name to monitor as the season progresses, and with a mix of experience and new faces, Cullman has the profile of a team capable of working its way into the conversation in Class 6A.

Gardendale
Fresh off another deep postseason run, Gardendale carries momentum into 2026 after reaching the Final Four and falling to eventual state champion Hartselle. While the Rockets did graduate a large senior class, particularly on the offensive side, there’s confidence in the program’s ability to reload under head coach Ryan Keedy, who consistently has his teams playing their best baseball down the stretch. Caleb Banks (Central Alabama CC) returns as a key middle-of-the-order presence, giving the lineup an experienced anchor. On the mound, Parker Robinson (Lawson State) and Austin Webb (Central Alabama) are back to headline the rotation once again. With proven leadership and pitching at the core, Gardendale has the pieces to stay in the mix and work its way back into the Class 6A conversation.

Gulf Shores
Coming off a 20-14-1 season and a trip to the second round of the Class 6A playoffs, Gulf Shores carries valuable momentum into 2026 after leaning heavily on underclassmen during last year’s postseason run. That experience now returns in a more seasoned form, with a veteran senior core headlined by Price Stephens (Southern Union CC), Jacob O’Bryan (Bishop State CC), and John Luke Stephens (Mississippi Gulf Coast CC). The Dolphins also bring back a deep pitching staff, led by John William Nix and Woods McElroy, giving them reliable options to manage games throughout the spring. With continuity across the roster and another challenging schedule ahead, Gulf Shores has the makeup of a team capable of building on last year’s run and working its way into the Class 6A conversation as the season unfolds.

Helena
One of the more difficult teams to leave outside the Top 10, Helena comes off a strong 2025 season that included a Sweet 16 run before falling to Stanhope Elmore in a competitive three-game series. While much of the top of the order graduated, the Huskies return a solid core and turn the page to a new era under first-year head coach Mitch Moreland. Davis Kelley (Montevallo), Lane Harris, Samuel Odom, Jonathan Roberto, and Hudson Campbell are among the starters back from last spring, providing continuity across the lineup. On the mound, Brayden Dockery (Northeast Mississippi) and Justin Mullenix return after serving as the top two starters during the playoff run, with Jake Holderfield (Calhoun CC) another name to watch as the season unfolds. With experience still in place and proven arms at the front of the staff, Helena has the profile of a team capable of staying in the mix and pushing back toward the Top 10.

Hueytown
Fresh off a 25-15 season, a Sweet 16 appearance, and a 10th straight area championship, Hueytown continues to set the standard for consistency in Class 6A. The Golden Gophers bring back a large senior core, led by Jose Irreaza (Central Alabama CC), Caleb Chapman, and Jackson Carmichael (East Mississippi CC), giving them experience at key positions on both sides of the ball. They’re also anchored on the mound by Will Vaughan and bolstered in the infield by Bronson Moore, who is coming off a strong freshman campaign. With defense, team speed, and pitching depth defining their identity, Hueytown has the makeup to once again be a factor and push deep into the Class 6A postseason picture.

Stanhope Elmore
Fresh off a Final Four appearance and another deep postseason run, Stanhope Elmore carries proven momentum into 2026 and remains a program built to contend in Class 6A. While a few roles will need to be filled early, the Mustangs return two cornerstone pieces in multi-year starters Hayden Anderson (Gadsden State CC) and Jordan Jones (Bevill State CC), both of whom are set to anchor the roster again this spring. Under head coach DK Shuman, Stanhope Elmore has consistently played its best baseball down the stretch, and that identity continues to shape the program’s approach. In a deep and competitive field, the Mustangs have the experience and leadership to stay in the mix and make another push as the season unfolds.

Team Superlatives

🏆 Most Complete Team: Homewood
Homewood checks just about every box entering 2026 after bringing back the core of a 30-9 team that pushed eventual state champion Hartselle to three games in the Sweet 16, falling 2-1 in a decisive Game 3. That group set a new standard for the program a year ago, and with so much experience returning, the Patriots look built to sustain that level. The roster is headlined by Levi Nickoli (Auburn), one of the top players in the state who impacts the game both in the heart of the order and at the front of the rotation, and is supported by a deep cast that includes Jack Bland (Calhoun CC), Cooper Mullins (Northwest Shoals CC), Cooper Sain, Will Siegel, Ben Roberts (Northwest Shoals CC), and Drew Susce (Gadsden State CC). That blend of multi-year starters, positional versatility, and two-way ability gives Homewood answers in every phase of the game. With proven postseason experience and balance across the roster, the Patriots enter 2026 looking like one of the most complete and reliable contenders in Class 6A.

🔥 Best Pitching Staff: Chelsea
A year removed from a runner-up finish in Class 6A, Chelsea once again reloads with a pitching staff that sets the standard across the classification. The Hornets bring back a trio of upper-80s right-handers in Jackson Price, Grant Hill (Grand Canyon), and Silas Osbourn (Mississippi Gulf Coast CC), all of whom carry significant varsity innings and postseason experience. That frontline group is backed by Luke Neill (Snead State CC), Brock Garrett (Central Alabama), and Jordan Garcia, giving Chelsea the depth and flexibility to mix and match against opposing lineups. With quality options throughout the staff, the Hornets have the ability to control games and manage series play at a high level. If the offense, led by returners like Aiden Craven and Bryant Wisdom, provides steady support, this pitching staff again gives Chelsea a championship-level foundation in 2026.

💣 Offense to Watch: Hartselle
Coming off another Class 6A state championship, Hartselle brings back the core of a lineup that powered a 36-9 season and is positioned to be one of the deepest and most dangerous offenses in the state. The Tigers return a wave of experienced bats, including Asher Doepel (Northwest Florida State CC), Cole Miles (Jacksonville State), Cruise Baker (Shelton State CC), Houston Falciani, Braden Weathers, and Carter Lee, giving them production and postseason pedigree throughout the order. That kind of continuity makes this a group that can apply pressure from top to bottom and score in multiple ways. While the pitching staff will sort out some new roles behind Connor Stiles (Itawamba CC) and Doepel, the lineup once again profiles as the tone-setter for this team. With so much proven firepower back in place, Hartselle’s offense looks poised to be a major reason the Tigers remain at the forefront of the Class 6A title chase in 2026.

🚀 Highest Ceiling: Spain Park
After a season spent testing a young roster against some of the state’s best competition, Spain Park enters 2026 with a group that looks ready to turn that experience into real results. The Jaguars competed in one of the toughest areas in Class 6A a year ago and, despite missing the postseason, showed they can match up with elite programs on a nightly basis. That same core now returns older and more polished, and the addition of Hudson Franks gives the rotation another experienced, upper-80s arm to pair with an already talented staff. Offensively, the lineup is loaded with upside, led by Rhys Jones (Alabama-Birmingham), Joe Cross (Snead State), Connor Greb (Auburn), Slade Bounds, Evan Taylor, and Brodie Bragg, while Nash Davis, one of the top two-way prospects in the 2028 class, adds impact both on the mound and at the plate. With high-end talent spread throughout the roster and another year of growth under their belts, Spain Park has the upside to take a significant step forward and push into the Class 6A postseason picture this spring.

🧱 Highest Floor: Mountain Brook
Mountain Brook once again sets a high baseline in Class 6A after reaching the 28-win mark and advancing to the Elite Eight a season ago before falling to Gardendale. While replacing the impact of graduated standout Caleb Barnett won’t be easy, the Spartans are far from starting over with Paul Barnett (Alabama) now stepping into the spotlight as the top-ranked junior in the state. He returns as a top-of-the-order bat, the starting shortstop, and a key back-end arm, giving Mountain Brook a proven anchor on both sides of the ball. Around him, Hunter Davis (Northwest Shoals CC), Sam Estes (Millsaps College), Noah Crosby (Calhoun CC), and Luke Houser (Northeast Mississippi CC) provide a strong core of returning starters, while Bryant Diddell (Shelton State CC) and Jude Davidson (Navy) form a dependable 1-2 punch in the rotation with postseason innings already under their belts. With experience, stability, and pitching depth at the core, the Spartans once again enter the season as one of the safest bets to be in the mix deep into the Class 6A postseason.
