La Mirada Preseason All-State: Catcher Analysis

On January 3rd, the Prep Baseball California team hosted the La Mirada Preseason All-State at La Mirada High School in La Mirada, Cal. This was an invite-only event for high school classes (2026-2029), and gave our staff an ample look at the state's top prospects.

Today, we will we’re taking a look at all of the catchers from the event, with a Top-5 ranking from the day:

TOP-5 CATCHING PROSPECTS

1. Brady Abner, El Dorado High (CA), 2026
Positional Profile: C/1B Backstop with athletic actions allowing for mobility and upside behind the plate.
Body: 5-10.7, 163-pounds. Lean, athletic build with good proportions.
Hit: RHH. Sets up in a balanced base with a wide lower half and hands working just below the rear shoulder. Swing is compact and efficient, staying level through the zone with consistent barrel control. Shows the ability to stay short to the ball and drive it with intent to all fields. 64.6 mph bat speed with 20g of rotational acceleration.
Power: 94 mph max exit velocity (79.2 avg.); 263-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. C - 80 mph. Quick, compact arm stroke from an over-the-top slot, delivering accurate throws with carry.
Defense: 1.95-2.07 pop time range; Fast transitions out of the crouch and clean, coordinated lower-half actions.
Athletic Testing: 17.40-inch max vertical jump.
