Each classification presents its own identity and challenges, from deep fields loaded with proven contenders to wide-open races featuring emerging programs ready to take the next step. Others on the Bubble
Decatur Heritage Christian
Decatur Heritage Christian has been one of the state’s top small-school programs in recent years and is coming off another strong season after surpassing 25 wins and reaching the Sweet 16 in 2025. While the Eagles did graduate a significant amount of production from last year’s senior class, they still return key pieces, including Ford Sparkman (Snead State CC). With that foundation in place, Decatur Heritage Christian should once again contend among the top Class 2A teams in North Alabama and has a clear path to breaking into the polls with a strong start this spring.
Pleasant Valley
Pleasant Valley enters the 2026 season carrying momentum from a breakthrough 2025 campaign that saw the Raiders capture their first area championship since 2008, finish undefeated in area play, and host a first-round playoff series. The Raiders went 17–10 overall and, despite a first-round exit, pushed Lindsay Lane Christian to the limit in a pair of one-run games. Offensively, Pleasant Valley has averaged more than 10 runs per game over each of the past three seasons, a trend they’ll look to sustain this spring. With a roster built primarily around seniors and juniors, led by Peyton Mann and Wesley Wheeler, the Raiders are well positioned to remain a factor in Class 2A, Area 13 and could work their way into the polls as the season unfolds.
Sumiton Christian
Sumiton Christian enters the 2026 season just outside the Top 10 after graduating a large senior class that powered one of the most successful stretches in program history, including a Class 1A state championship in 2024 and an Elite Eight run in Class 2A in 2025. While the Eagles did lose a significant group of contributors, they still return several key pieces with multiple years of varsity experience. Sophomore Colton Glass profiles as a quality two-way prospect, while Reid Cornelius has been a steady presence behind the plate and in the middle of the order for multiple seasons. If the new pieces come along quickly, Sumiton Christian has the makeup of a team capable of pushing its way into the polls later this spring.
Team Superlatives
🏆 Most Complete Team: Mars Hill Bible
Mars Hill Bible enters the 2026 season at the top of Class 2A after making consecutive deep postseason runs and establishing itself as a true title contender. The Panthers return a veteran group from last year’s Final Four team that went 23-15 and was edged by eventual champion Vincent in a tightly contested three-game series for the second straight season. That core includes Noah Hanback, Cody Willis, Luke Fowler, Malen Moore, and Beau Willis, while Brooks Campbell is back on the mound after missing time with injury last spring. With experience, depth, and proven postseason production, Mars Hill Bible opens 2026 built to make another deep run in a loaded Class 2A field.
🔥 Best Pitching Staff: Red Bay
Red Bay enters the 2026 season with its pitching staff positioned as the backbone of another potential postseason run after a 25-9 campaign in 2025 that included an area championship and an Elite Eight appearance. The Tigers bring back several key arms, led by Jeremiah Thorne, Ayden Pruitt, and Carson McGee, all of whom factor in as impactful two-way contributors capable of controlling games on the mound. They’re also joined by Landyn Lewey, who adds another reliable option to a deep and versatile staff. Pitching and defense have become the foundation of Red Bay’s identity, and that continuity gives them a high level of week-to-week stability. With multiple experienced arms and dependable defense behind them, the Tigers are built to win series and stay in the postseason hunt deep into the spring.
💣 Offense to Watch: Ariton
Ariton enters the spring positioned to lean heavily on its lineup as a driving force behind another strong season in Class 2A. The Purple Cats are coming off a 25-win campaign in 2025 that included a Sweet 16 appearance, one year after capturing the state championship in 2024, and the offense once again projects as a strength. That group is fueled by a veteran core featuring Wells Ganey (Wallace-Dothan CC), Easton Kilpatrick, Pierce Gill, Brodie Lowery, Addison Senn, and Conner Davidson, among others. Ariton showed last season it can slug its way to wins and apply pressure throughout the order, and that same offensive identity gives the Purple Cats a chance to control games again in 2026.
🚀 Highest Ceiling: Lindsay Lane Christian
Lindsay Lane Christian enters 2026 with high expectations and the pieces in place to make a deep postseason push if everything comes together. The Lions ran into a tough draw in the Sweet 16 a year ago, but they put together a strong season against a challenging schedule that helped set the tone for this spring. On paper, they’re a balanced group, returning a mix of senior leadership and talented underclassmen who gained valuable experience in 2025. That core is led by Lane Jones, Wyatt Wallace, Grayson Miller, Cooper Abernathy, Fin Reding, and Bryson McMullin. With that blend of experience and depth, Lindsay Lane Christian has the upside to push beyond last year’s finish and contend deep into the Class 2A bracket.
🧱 Highest Floor: GW Long
GW Long’s standard of excellence continues to set one of the highest floors in Class 2A, built on a tradition that includes 17 state championships in program history, five of them under current head coach Drew Miller, with the most recent title coming in 2022. That history alone establishes the expectation of consistent success, and it’s reinforced by a roster that brings back a wealth of experience from last year’s Sweet 16 team. The Rebels return key contributors in Blayne Wood, Zyan Marshall, Eben Pritchett, and Lawson German, among others, giving them a reliable core on both sides of the ball. Even with the usual year-to-year turnover, GW Long has shown an ability to reload and compete at a high level. That combination of tradition and returning production makes the Rebels one of the safest bets in the classification entering 2026.
