PBKC Top Off-Speed Class of 2028: Luke McKenna

As we look back on the 2025 summer tournament circuit here in Kansas City, we’ll be breaking down the top players by tool from each class based on evaluations from our scouting team at Homefield and Creekside. It’s not often in today’s game that you see a quality splitter, especially with sliders and sweepers becoming the go-to offspeed pitches. Luke McKenna benefits from the splitter as his primary change-of-pace offering, and it pairs extremely well with his 90 mph fastball. The pitch shows strong deception out of the hand thanks to the grip and his over-the-top delivery, giving hitters the illusion of a firm fastball before it falls off the table late.

At the Central Super Sophomore Games, McKenna’s splitter averaged 1442 RPM, about 565 rotations less than his fastball creating roughly 10 inches of downward movement with almost no horizontal action. In other words, hitters are forced to gear up for a high-80s fastball with carry, only to see the same look drop straight down at the last moment.

As McKenna continues to polish his delivery and overall arsenal, this fastball/splitter combination has the potential to be a deadly weapon for the No. 1 ranked player in the state of Kansas.
