San Diego Preseason All-State: Catcher Analysis

On January 11th, the Prep Baseball California team hosted the San Diego Preseason All-State at Maranatha Christian High School in San Diego, Cal. This was an invite-only event for high school classes (2026-2029), and gave our staff an ample look at the state's top prospects.

Today, we will we’re taking a look at all of the catchers from the event, with a Top-5 ranking from the day:

TOP CATCHING PROSPECTS

1. Evan Skelskey, Corona High School (CA), 2028
Positional Profile: C/SS Athlete with a catcher-first look and the versatility to move around the INF.
Body: 5-11.9, 175-pounds. Lean, athletic frame with plenty of room to continue adding strength.
Hit: RHH. Balanced, upright setup with relaxed hands and a controlled, timed hand load. Sinks into back leg when loading up. Efficient through the zone with good use of the lower half. Shows the ability to stay through the middle of the field. Comfortable letting the ball travel and using the middle of the field, with the ability to turn on mistakes. 68.6 mph bat speed with 10g of rotational acceleration.
Power: 98 mph max exit velocity (86.1 avg.); 362-foot max batted distance.
Arm: RH. C - 83 mph. Short, hand-to-ear release. Throws show carry and stay on line, with actions that suggest reliability controlling the running game.
Defense: 1.89-2.06 pop time range; Receives with quiet, soft hands and presents the glove well. Sets a stable base behind the plate and works cleanly through the catch. Footwork out of the crouch is efficient, and the transfer is quick and direct.
Athletic Testing: 6.74 runner in the 60-yard dash.
