We continue our MD High School preseason outlook with an in-depth look at Prince George's County, Baltimore County, and Baltimore City. Below, you will find notes on each, as well as players to watch for as we inch closer to the spring season.

Prince George's County

Baseball in Prince George’s County delivered plenty of storylines in 2025. Bowie once again set the standard, rolling to a perfect 15-0 conference record and finishing 16-3 overall behind standout Jack Young, who returns for his senior campaign. In Class 4A, Eleanor Roosevelt continued its steady run of success, posting another double-digit win season and advancing to the state tournament before falling to the eventual champions. High Point emerged as one of the year’s biggest surprises, compiling an impressive 14-4 record and pushing through the regional bracket before dropping an extra-inning thriller to Montgomery Blair. Meanwhile, the most unexpected turn came from Henry A. Wise, which stumbled to a 2-17 finish after back-to-back 12-win seasons — its toughest campaign in nearly a decade.

Class 2A proved to be the county’s strongest lower classification, highlighted by three 15-plus win teams: Gwynn Park (18–2), Frederick Douglass (17–3), and Fairmont Heights (15–6). Despite the depth, Henry E. Lackey of the SMAC navigated the loaded regional field, walking off top-seeded Gwynn Park before defeating Douglass 6–4 in the title game. In Class 1A, CMIT-North met expectations by powering through its region and earning yet another state tournament berth.

With many teams returning key contributors on both sides of the ball, this spring shapes up to be just as compelling. Expect Bowie to remain the team to beat in 4A, with Roosevelt, DuVal, Parkdale, and others close behind. In the lower classifications, Gwynn Park should once again contend for a regional crown.

Baltimore County

Baseball in Baltimore County has quietly built one of the more competitive landscapes in the state over the past two seasons. While the county hasn’t sent a team to the state championship game, it has consistently placed multiple programs in the state tournament — including several semifinalists last spring.

In Class 4A, Kenwood caught fire at the right time. After a 7–11 regular season and entering the playoffs as a No. 3 seed, Kenwood surged through the bracket and captured the region title, knocking off heavy favorite Parkville (14–6) in convincing fashion.

Class 3A has long been the county’s foundation, anchored by perennial contenders Towson (23–5), Catonsville (11–8), and Dulaney (14–6–1). Entering last spring, most expected a regional showdown between Towson and Dulaney. Though Dulaney endured a somewhat uneven regular season and entered as a No. 3 seed, they flipped the switch in the postseason, dominating their region and earning another state tournament berth. Now moving up to 4A, Dulaney could find an even clearer path back to the state bracket.

Class 2A delivered the most drama. In North Region I, New Town (14–4) secured the top seed with its third straight 14-plus win season, followed closely by familiar powers Randallstown (14–6–1) and Hereford (15–8–1). Hereford once again claimed the region crown and advanced to the state semifinals before falling to the eventual champions. In North Region II, Patapsco (11–5) earned the top seed but was overwhelmed by regional mainstay Sparrows Point (11–8). However, the biggest surprise came from Eastern Tech (17–6–1), which improved by eight wins from the previous year and captured the region title in a major surprise.

In Class 1A, Pikesville (15-8) rode the arm of Isaac Garonzik to another state tournament appearance, advancing to the semifinals before falling to Saint Michaels in unforgettable fashion — a perfectly executed fake pickoff sealing a dramatic one-run game.

With Dulaney’s move to 4A and Patapsco sliding into 3A, 2026 brings significant realignment and fresh intrigue. If the past two seasons are any indication, Baltimore County baseball is primed to deliver more fireworks this spring.

Baltimore City

Most Baltimore City programs compete in either the 3A or 1A classifications, and both tiers delivered compelling storylines last spring.

In Class 1A, Academy for College and Career Exploration (ACCE) caught fire at the perfect time. After winning four of its final five regular-season games to build momentum, ACCE carried that surge into the postseason and stunned heavy favorite Frederick Douglass, earning its first state tournament appearance in a long time.

Class 3A once again revolved around two familiar powers. Baltimore Polytechnic Institute (13–6) continued its impressive resurgence. While the Engineers didn’t match the dominance of their 2024 campaign, they still had the pieces in place for another deep playoff push. The road was anything but easy, however, as Baltimore City College (9–5) pushed them to the limit, with Poly ultimately prevailing in a tightly contested region championship game.

As 2026 approaches, expect Poly to remain the standard in the city. With an experienced core that has enjoyed sustained success over the past few seasons, the Engineers appear poised to make one more serious run at a title.
