One of the bigger surprises of the day was gap year senior Lucas Verhoeven. Pitching exclusively from the stretch, the gap year senior took the crown of top velo, reaching a peak of 90.9, though he dipped more into the mid-high 80s as he went on. It's a violent delivery with an intent to throw hard, and he doesn't change his arm speed on breaking pitches. The CH works when it's in the zone. Overall, Verhoeven had a good day on the mound.
3/29/24
Another pitcher within the AHP program that has had a productive offseason is reclassed 2025 Lucas Verhoeven. It starts with a big velocity jump, the 6-foot-0, 180-pound RHP is now up to 87 mph with the fastball. Out of a high ¾ slot, Verhoeven has plenty of carry up in the zone with the fastball that pairs well with a fading changeup and a downer curveball. With a spin rate north of 2400 rpm, he has over -8 inches of induced vertical break on that curveball. This repertoire allows him to work in different areas of the zone while generating lots of swing & miss in the process. Verhoeven will be an uncommitted arm to follow this season.
