10/10/18 - 5-foot-11, 170 pound frame. He has always been the type of catcher that performed well in game action, but didn't possess the type of tools that catch the eye of coaches and scouts. He's worked hard to improve physically and posted by far the best numbers we've seen from him, with a best pop of 1.96 and 76 mph velocity while not sacrificing any accuracy. Johnson consistently guns down runners in games, blocks everything and handled the most talented staff in the state last spring at Mesquite HS. He’s the type of defender that could fill in defensively at nearly any level of college baseball. Offensively there’s some room for improvement as he uses a leg-lift that doesn’t do much for him as it isn’t timed consistently and tends to start late. More bottom of the order type profile; defense is calling card. Also posted 7.7 second 60-yard dash and 81 mph exit velocity.
6/27/18 - 5-foot-11, 170-pound frame. Offensively hit from an athletic, balanced stance. Leg lift loading pattern, feet are almost touching before striding out. Loads hands very high and deep. Barrel takes a downhill attack angle at times. Maintains balance throughout swing. High one-handed finish; 79 mph exit velocity. Looked comfortable working out behind the plate defensively. Good job replacing feet and gaining ground towards the bag. Quick transfer. Slight hitch in arm action. Pop times ranged 2.12 - 2.17 seconds and posted a 73 mph catcher velocity. Has consistently shown solid blocking and receiving skills, even when handling velocity. Also posted a 7.59 60-yard dash.
1/28/18 - 5-foot-11, 170-pound frame. Hits from wide, slightly open setup with knee-knock trigger. Back side loses ground in swing. Found barrel in BP, but tended to cut off his swing some. Hands take short path to ball; line drive approach. Posted 81 mph exit velocity. Best pop time of 2.07 with 70 mph velocity behind the plate. Short, quick arm action produced accurate throws to 2B. Posted 7.68 60-yard dash.
