Positional Profile: RHP/1B
Body: 6-4, 236-pounds.
Delivery: Stretch only with an aggressive forward move that gets him down the slope with intent. Hands come set at the belt line and he maintains good balance throughout the motion. He mixes both slide step and leg lift, showing he can vary looks. The head can yank down at times which pulls him off posture, but the direction to the plate stays mostly clean and repeatable.
Arm Action: RH. Short and compact arm action that works from a true over the top release. The arm moves with looseness and finishes with healthy deceleration, often allowing the arm to hang naturally after follow through. He keeps the glove side on line and lets it work back behind him toward second base after release. The overall action is simple and helps him stay consistent timing wise.
FB: T91, 89-91 mph. Fastball jumps out of the hand with firm life. Stays pretty true with minimal run and works best when he drives it to the top of the zone. Still refining control, but the overall strength of the pitch stands out. T2019, 1954 average rpm.
SL: 73-76 mph. T2432, 2370 average rpm.
CH: 81-82 mph. T1519, 1480 average rpm.
CUT: 81-82 mph.
ATH: 8.09 runner in the 60. 1.98 and 4.61 in the 10 and 30 yard splits.
Positional Profile: RHP/1B
Body: 6-4, 236-pounds.
Hit: RHH. Wide and balanced base with hands even with the top of the shoulder and preset back behind the body. Smooth, slightly uphill swing with good use of the lower half. Creates real torque and already shows some juice in the bat. 69 mph bat speed with 13 G's of rotational acceleration.
Power: 106 max exit velocity, averaged 95.2 mph. 371' max distance.
Arm: RH.
ATH: 8.09 runner in the 60. 1.98 and 4.61 in the 10 and 30 yard splits.
Vizual Edge: 79.5 Edge Score
The former Future Gamer and Yavapai commit has been a name to know in BC for a couple years now. Fernandes really stands out on the mound with his 6-foot-4, 195-pound frame. He has a quick arm and a steep approach angle which both create deception out of the hand. Working down in the zone allows him to create weak ground ball contact and swing & miss with a fastball in the 86-88 mph range. He has two breaking balls, both with unique profiles that he tunnels well out of the hand. He likes to attack hitters early and when filling the zone, there aren’t many who do it better than the Junior National Team and Langley Blaze product.
After a stand-out performance at the Canada Cup, Fernades continued to play well at the Western Canada ProCase. On the mound, he comfortably sat in the 83-84 mph range and mixed his secondary offerings well during the live-game action. His curveball and slider both profile differently and his short, quick arm creates deception out of the hand. Working down in the zone allows Fernandes to utilize his steep approach angle creating lots of ground balls and swing & miss. At the dish, he added a couple base hits showing his two-way potential. The Canadian Junior National Team member is getting hot at the right time and will look to continue doing so going forward.
Canada Cup may have been the best our staff has ever seen from uncommitted ‘24 RHP Owen Fernandes. The fastball was a couple ticks higher than we’re used to as it sat 86-88mph and he sat down the first 12 batters he faced in his start against Saskatchewan, also striking out the first inning in order. Worked with a pair of breaking balls with two different movement patterns and had feel for both. Attacked hitters from start to finish as he went the distance, allowing just one run (0 ER) on four hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. One of the top uncommitted arms in the country and looks to be elevating his game at the right time.
At 6-4, 175-pounds, Fernandes is one of the. more intruiguing two-way players on the West Coast. A product of the Langley Blaze, there's jump in the bat. Hands work in the infield, projects more. as a corner infeidler. Could shine a bit on the mound as well. Looks the part on the mound . FB that lives 83-86. Spins the CB well w/ more horizontal movement. Showed feel for several pitches. Interesting two-way talent.
