Although 2023 OF Sam Shaw (Xavier commit) hasn’t been racking up the hits this week like other names here, he’s certainly had the loudest hit we’ve seen over the past few days. He took a thigh-high fastball deep over the right field fence for a no-doubt home run. The bat speed has been on display this week and he consistently puts up quality at-bats and has taken his fair share of walks. One of the top 2023 prospects in Canada.
Shaw is the real deal. He was buzzing around the ballpark all day, socializing with players from different organizations, chatting up coaches and event staff and noticeably having a good time. Oh, he can play too. He was among the top in the camp recorded in running, throwing and hitting. He topped at 76.8 Bat Speed and averaged 72.7. For those who may not know, Shaw as a 10th grader, boasted just shy of a .500 batting average over around 100 plate appearances in his first season at 90ft baseball. He did not want to miss out, so he joined the outfield group to pull a few down to the third base, topping at 88mph. At his actual position, shortstop, he moved around the 6-spot well, showing good hands and a strong arm across the diamond. He could stand to move more aggressively through the ball and rely a little less on his arm, which will only help him adapt to a faster pace of play once he gets to the next level. Shaw is emerging as the potential golden boy of BC a little more every time he gets seen.
