A fastball with hop has a flat approach angle and visually jumps through the zone. When thrown up in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher swing and miss average. Hop+ of 100 is MLB average.
Fastball
Sink+
A fastball with sink has low backspin and drops through the strike zone. When thrown down in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher ground ball percentage and lower launch angle. Sink+ of 100 is MLB average.
Fastball
Rise+
A fastball with rise has a high percentage of backspin. When thrown up in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher fly ball percentage. Rise+ of 100 is MLB average
Slider
Hammer+
A hammer breaking ball drops vertically with velocity through the zone, or 12-to-6 movement. Hammer+ of 100 is MLB average.
Slider
Sweep+
A sweeping breaking ball moves horizontally with velocity through the zone. Sweep+ of 100 is MLB average.

Standing at 6-foot-4, 222-pounds, you would be hard pressed to find a more physical freshman on this side of the country. Douw was a member of our Junior Future Games team a year ago and has continued to develop nicely. On the mound, he showed a quality 3 pitch mix. Douw features a ride and run fastball that sat in the low 80’s, topping out at 84.4 mph. The changeup and slider have both improved by a noticeable margin since the Vancouver New Year Invite in February. In the box Douw continued his trend of consistently elevating to the poolside with exit velocities in the low 90’s. The North Shore Twins product will be a definite follow on the west coast for years to come.
5/23/24
It’s not often you see a 2028 stand out at an event with players much older than him, but Van Heerden did just that. At 6-foot-2, 190-pounds he’s physical for his age and that was evident when he stepped on the mound. The fastball sat 76-77 mph with the ability to spin it north of 2100 rpm. The curveball was 67-69 mph with plenty of horizontal break, averaging over 16 inches of it. He also spun it consistently around 2500 rpm. As Van Heerden continues to mature and add strength, more velocity and spin will come with it making him a 2028 to follow for years to come.
