Body: 6-foot-1, 205-pounds. Physical frame with strength throughout.
Delivery: Tall and fall delivery, leans into his back-side at balance point, works on-line, lands square, finishes upright and crossing over.
Arm Action: RH. Arm action is quick and clean, aggressive intent, 3/4 slot.
FB: T85, 82-84 mph. Mostly straight, heavy.
SL: 71-75 mph. 11/5 shape, tight spin, depth.
CH: 73-74 mph. Fade action.
PBR Showdown
Uncommitted. Cates, 6-foot-1, 205-pound, came out throwing 82-85 and featuring a 69-71 mph slider pounding the zone early with both pitches. The delivery was max effort and probably accounted to him losing some velocity in the second inning. Cates could stand to maintain the velocity as he firms up his frame with maturation; he has the makings to be effective because of his ability to throw strikes and the arm has current strength to it.
6-foot-1, 195-pound right-handed two-way prospect, large frame with strength throughout to work with. On the mound, arm plays cleanly, full arm swing to a high ¾ slot, above average hand speed. Tall and fall delivery, works on-line, lands square, finishes crossing over towards first base. Fastball, mostly straight, flashed run, located for strikes low in the zone, 78-80, touched 81. Curveball, 11/5 shape, depth, 60-64. Changeup, sinking action, feel for, 70-71. Offensively, open setup, short had load back, low leg kick timing trigger, remains balanced. Profiles as a power hitter, short, uphill barrel path through the zone, generated top spin on most hits, 82 exit velocity. Defensively, short arm action from a ¾ slot, kept throws around the bag, 74 across the infield.. A corner defender, showed average range, clean footwork and exchanges. Ran an 8.27 60 yard dash.
