Gavin McBeath, Perry Meridian, 2023, IN
Position: 3B/1B
Body: 6-foot-3, 230-pound physical mature frame.
Hit: (RHH) Advanced. Begins in a tall balanced stance with a tight compact load, then uses a controlled leg kick. Electric bat speed. Good extension on his finish, upward swing. Aggressive gap to gap approach.
Power: 97.5 mph exit velocity, average 88.8 mph. 69.3 mph bat speed average. 21.6 mph hand speed average.
Defense: (IF) Sure hands, athletic footwork, natural exchange. Capable. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic.
Arm: 82 mph infield velocity. Very quick arm action, ¾ slot.
McBeath is a 5-foot-11 153-pound right-handed hitting third baseman and pitcher. Has an athletic build with a lot of room to fill out. He ran an 8.08 60 and a 5.03 home-to-1B. Offensively- Starts with the bat straight up, front foot slightly in, back elbow up. Big front leg kick during load to generate power. Quick hands allows for quick bat speed. Consistently barrels up the ball. Back hip explodes through the ball. Exit velocity of 80 MPH. Major offensive potential. Defensively- Moves to the ball well. Footwork hasn’t caught up with his size, but will with time. Throws on target; 70 MPH arm strength. Will need some polish but that will come with game experience and off-season work. Pitching- Starts with heels on the rubber, facing the catcher. Steps to the side, front knee comes up to chest. Throws downhill with intent. Could have more command but that will come. Fastball sits 73-74 MPH, tops at 76 MPH. Curveball has a sharp 12-6 break; stays down in the zone. Sits at 60-62 MPH. 2023 grad with upside.
