2/28/20:Six-foot-3, 215 pound junior righty with a 90-93 mph running fastball and an above-average changeup. Throws from a three-quarter slot with a long arm path and fair arm speed. Fastball had good sink when down in the zone and was complemented by plus horizontal movement. Changeup ranged from 81-83 mph with fastball arm speed and plus fade. Saw a better breaking pitch during the Cape Cod All-Star game than during this recent look in Minneapolis. Below-average on this look, yet useable show pitch at 80-81 mph. Pitched five innings, allowed one run on two hits and punched out six during his Friday start against Iowa. Currently looks to be a potential later round pick on Day Two, but Johnston could push his way higher into the mid-rounds by improving upon his analytics; specifically raising his SO rate which will likely be accomplished by improving the consistency and the quality of his breaking ball. 8/19/19:Sat 88-90 mph with his fastball and showed an above average curveball at 81-82 during his one scoreless inning at the All-Star game.
