Santos, a 2019 right-handed hitting first baseman, stands at 5-foot-8 and weighs 190 pounds, ran a 8.5 60. Offensively- Starts with a crouched athletic slightly open base, hands are above the back shoulder with the barrel of the bat at about a 45-degree angle. Initiate the swing with a lift of the front foot, minimal stride, remaining quiet with the hands and weight shift as well. Showed a line drive approach to the middle of the field, especially driving the pitches in the lower third of the zone. Tends to rush the hands through the hitting zone ahead of the rotation of the backside hip which cost some bat speed on approach to the ball. With a more aggressive approach with the lower half and keeping the hands back, will improve the exit velocity of 64 MPH shown on the day. Defensively- Prepitch prep steps were quality getting the body into a strong fielding position. Approached the ball aggressively but under control, fielding the ball out in front of the body but let the ball get a bit deep when throwing. Throws will show more carry and velocity if the back foot can stay down and allow more leg drive with the hips which will create more arm speed. Showed athleticism when turning the 3-6-3 double play, but would also benefit from turning to the glove side. Arm velocity of 64 MPH was recorded on the day.
