8/3/14
5-foot-11, 195-pound athletic body frame with stronger lower half. From the crouch he shows good footwork staying short and compact on his throws to second, has good arm strength. He reached pop times between 1.97-2.02 using 82 mph arm strength on his throws. Hits from a wider, open stance getting back to being squared up to even, showed the ability to use both parts of the field during his BP session. He used 73 mph exit velocity, and ran a 4.82 out of the box.
8/1/12
5-foot-10, 180-pound catcher. Shows good catching skills and blocking ability while framing well. Good grade arm strength from the crouch (76 mph) and pop times between 2.00-2.16. Needs to improve glove to hand exchange. Line drive type hitter. Shows good swing finish with hands. Still room for improvement, including better use of lower half.
Montoya is a young prospect, but shows a strong skill set that will be interesting to following over the next few years. Behind the plate, he showed good footwork and a quick, clean exchange that generates a consistent 2.21-2.26 pop time. From the crouch, he registered a velocity of 73 mph. At the plate, he needs to simplify his swing to become a more consistent hitter. His rhythm is disrupted by extra movement, including a big stride that can be disruptive to his timing. He registered an 8.91 60-yard dash.
