5-foot-11, 174-pound OF/LHP Brayden Byers was a standout at the Athletics scout day both as a position player and pitcher. Byers led off with a 6.98 60 yard dash, the top of the day, and showcased the best outfield throwing arm as well. Because of the togetherness of Byers’ body movements, everything works cleanly. Byers creates good angels on the ball and sets up well to make on-line throws that were up to 80 mph. Byers was letting it eat from the right-handed side of the batter's box; he showcased some raw power to all fields with nice barrel action. Starting slightly closed and finishing slightly opened on the bump, Byers showed the ability to control the zone with his pitches. From the high ¾ arm-slot Byers threw a fastball with some natural run arm-side and a changeup that’s usable. His over-hand curveball has a gradual break to it, and he will need to make sure he creates the same extension when throwing that pitch as he does with his other two. Byers is an interesting two-way player that could help a school from both areas.
In the outfield, he approaches the ball cautiously. Outfield footwork is playable, fielding the ball on his front glove side foot. Throws from a 3/4 slot with a long release. Ball comes out of the hand nicely with developing arm speed. On the mound, the southpaw has a fluid delivery to the plate. Uses an average tempo delivery. Front foot lands slightly open upon strike. Releases the ball from a ¾ arm slot with a long arm action. Throws three different offerings. Fastball comes in with a 2-seam trajectory. Curveball gradually breaks on a 1-7 plane. Changeup shows similar arm speed to his fastball with side to side action.
