Shepherd, a sturdy 5-foot-9, 185-pound catcher has a solid foundation in place. He put together a solid round at the plate, repeatable, compact swing, with an exit velo of 88 mph. Behind the plate, his pop-time was in the 2.20-2.38 range, getting off throws up to 70 mph. Showed softness to his hands while receiving. Name to follow in the 2021 class.
Shepherd, a left-handed hitting catcher listed at 5-foot-8, 175-pounds with room to grow and mature physically. Offensively, Shepherd had a max exit velo of 80 mph according to Rapsodo while his launch degree average was 17.8 degrees. Starts with a balanced setup, medium leg kick to load, minimal movement in load as hands are up and work close to body. Works to get into back hip while transferring weight, at times getting too far out front of body and core. Hands work to stay inside and use middle of field, added strength will help with bat speed and extension. Behind the plate, was between 2.18 - 2.21 pop time and 66 mph out the crouch with carry to the bag and most throws were online. Glove works and shows softness for receiving while there is signs of flexibility in hips. Young 2021 LHH catcher out of Newmarket with a base and fundamentals to build on.
Shepherd, a 5-foot-8, 175-pound 2021 grad with room to mature and add strength. Best present tool is the bat as he works from an open stance from the left side, knees slightly bent, does a good job with his load and timing, getting back online with his feet and hands in a good position to hit. Looked to stay middle of the field, hands worked inside baseball and short path to contact, had an exit velo of 82 mph. Defensively, sets up well behind the dish, clean transfers and feet moved well and gained ground. Being able to add arm strength will be key for Shepherd moving forward as their is fundamentals to his game and has some tools that you can work with and he can continue to improve on.
