Cohen got the start on Friday night and it was our first look at the Toronto Mets right-hander in some time. He continues to look the part, size wise, at 6-foot-3, 185-pounds and he worked a good first inning. The fastball sat 84-86 and he was able to locate to both sides of the plate with good arm side run. He worked with a breaking ball at 74-76 and a changeup at 77-79. More development needed on the secondary stuff but with the arm and size, there’s lots to like from Cohen going forward.
A young 2023 prospect, Cohen is a 6-foot, 150-pound lean, and athletic right-handed pitcher/outfielder. Cohen started off Newmarket Scout Day running a 7.62 60 yard dash, showcasing athletic actions. At the plate, Cohen features looseness in his swing throughout with impressive body control considering his frame and his age. In the outfield, he stood out with his 79 mph arm strength which translates to the mound. He led off the pitching group sitting 73-77 mph, with a curveball in the 60-61 range. He demonstrated the ability to stay over the rubber while using a high leg kick to start his delivery. Cohen lands online and releases from a standard ¾ arm slot with short arm action. He displayed feel for his curveball, letting off an 11/5 shaped slow-breaker, and with added velocity, it’s easy to envision the pitch being a quality secondary offering for him. Considering his age, it’s an advanced delivery with fairly clean mechanics and a projectable body with upside.
