1B/LHP Johnny Casale (Brophy, 2024)
5-foot-10 165 pounds, average build with room for added size and strength. Controlled and clean actions across the board. (Running) 7.29 runner in the 60. Quick strides, moves well. With added strength and athleticism should see speed increase as well. (Offense) LH. Max EV 91. Max Dist. 350. Simple set up in the box. Sets up square to pitcher with base just outside of shoulder width and athletic bend in the knees. Knee to knee stride, can see a load into the back hip, hands are in a good position to fire. Stride can land slightly closed, lands in a strong position to hit. Has some hand speed with a short and direct bat path. Finishes swing shortly after contact, room for some more extension through the baseball. Contact stayed toward the middle of the field. Mix of GB/LD/FB contact, fly balls were to the off side, line drives were middle, ground balls to the pull side. Gap-to-gap line drive type bat at this time, strength is developing. (Defense) (1B) LH. IF velo 83. Showed good awareness with feet and positioning of the base, found the bag well with advanced footwork. Timing and direction of stretches were good. Uses different footwork to put him in the best possible spot to receive throws. Pops off the bag well while fielding. Advanced actions at 1B. Clean glove with soft hands, clean transfers, active feet, arm plays.
Game action: 1-2 1B, BB
Johnny Casale, Brophy (AZ), 2024
Positional Profile: 1B/LHP Don't know where his future will be yet, but Casale is a ball player. Good fundamentals of the game, and depending on strength and development will determine where he ends up.
Body: 5-foot-9, 150-pounds. Room for added strength and maturity. Proportionate build with high waist.
Hit: LHH. Strong athletic setup. Base is wider than shoulder width. Hands held at the ear with slight raise in the back elbow. Athletic bend in the knees and square to pitcher. Knee to knee stride. Direct path to the ball, showed adjustability on different pitches. Ability to drop the head on the down and in pitch, seems to be most comfortable to the pull side. Has a higher finish, would benefit from a lower finish, allowing slightly more extension through contact.
Power: 84.7 max exit velocity, averaged 80.3 mph. 290’ max distance. Finds the barrel consistently. Ball stays true to the pull side, this is where he has his most pop.
Arm: INF - 76 mph. Throws from a 3/4 slot with a quick release. Throws were accurate and in a position where the infielder on the receiving end could make a play.
Defense: Understands body positioning and footwork around the bag at first. Ability to pick the tough throw and timing with stretch is right. Footwork keeps him in motion while fielding ground balls. Glove work is good.
Run: 7.76 runner in the 60. Short strides, consistent timing with strides and arm swing.
Delivery: Smooth and easy delivery, mixes his tempo in the windup.
Arm Action: LH. Throws from a 3/4 slot.
FB: T76.8, 72.57-76.27 mph. Locates well with some armside run. Worked both sides of the plate. T2018, 2131 average rpm.
CB: 56.53-60.08 mph. Slower CB with some downward break. Majority to glove side of plate. T1869, 1927 average rpm.
CH: 64.60-66.14 mph. Throws with FB arm speed. Has some horizontal break to it, no misses up in the zone. T1311, 1380 average rpm.
5’2 118-pound frame. The LHH showed good feel for timing with a leg kick and staying behind the baseball. The leg kick is a good tool for timing for Casale as he stays loaded during his lift and when he starts his forward move which is advanced for his age. Middle approach with feel for hitting line drives and an exit velo of 62 MPH. At 1st, he showed a quick release and good feet to line up throws before catching the baseball. Arm strength across the diamond was 60 MPH.
On the mound showed potential for a quick arm and feel for the strike zone, topping out at 65 MPH. As lower half gets more engaged velo will jump and match his arm speed. Big breaking ball at 51-53 MPH, paired with a change up at 55-56 MPH.
