5/21/25
Tsai continues to show polish and consistency on the mound, putting together another strong outing this week. The uncommitted ‘26 right-hander went 5.1 innings, allowing 3 earned runs while flashing improved velocity and feel across his entire arsenal. His FB sat 83-85 mph and touched 86, marking a slight uptick from earlier in the spring, and he was able to locate it to both sides of the plate while mixing in three secondaries for strikes. The CB showed his typical 12/6 shape at 64-66 mph, and he also worked in a short SL at 73-74 that added another look for hitters. The CH (69-70) had fading action to the arm side and was used effectively to neutralize LHH. He worked in and out of trouble with poise and competed pitch-to-pitch, showing the ability to get off barrels and miss bats when he needed to. This outing builds on a strong showing I saw from Tsai earlier in the spring, where he tossed 6.2 innings and allowed 3 ER, falling just one out shy of a complete game win before surrendering a game-tying hit that ended his outing. Despite the no-decision, he threw the ball well that day too. Across both outings, Tsai has shown a mature, pitchable four-pitch mix and a strong understanding of how to attack hitters. He stays composed under pressure, limits damage, and competes deep into games. He finished the regular season at 7-0 with a 1.42 ERA, and in 2024 he held a 4-1 record with a 0.78 ERA—strong numbers that reflect how effective and dependable he’s been for San Marcos.
3/31/25

Coming into the matchup against Patrick Henry, Tsai had a record of 3-0 this spring and a career record of 7-1 since joining varsity with the Knights in 2024. He added to that with an impressive start in game 1 of the Lions Tournament. He tossed 6.2 innings with 3 ER allowed and was one 1 out away from getting a complete game win before he gave up a game tying hit that ended his outing. Overall though, he threw the ball well and was in control for the majority of his start. He really made only one mistake on the day, when he gave up a two run homer in the 4th. He ended up settling with a No-Decision but it should not take away from how productive he was in his 108 pitches. He attacked hitters with a heavy FB/CB combo and was able to keep them off balance and create a lot of weak contact and missed barrels. He sat 81-83 mph with his FB and was not afraid to fill it up in the strike zone and dare hitters to hit it. Due to the fact that he attacked with his 12/6 CB (63-66 mph) so frequently, his FB appeared to have some extra life behind it from the change of speeds. He induced a number of ground ball outs throughout and picked up a lot of big strikeouts in high pressure situations. He finished with 8 strikeouts and I really liked how he bared down with RISP and added some extra life with his stuff to pick up timely punch outs. He mixed in some arm side fading CHs as well to give PH hitters another look aside from his FB/CB tunnel. Tsai has an ERA of 1.15 in 2025 and is a huge reason why San Marcos is 6-2 this spring and really starting to hit their stride as a ball club.
