There is a great saying in baseball that "the hitters who hit the most hit the most" or can summed up simply by saying "hitters hit" whichever way you want to say the RHH Ethan Porter of Huntington Beach embodies the statement. Another solidly built athlete Porter stands in at 6'2 200 lbs. with present strength in his lower and upper body, but shows room to continue adding/polishing his frame.
During the workout portion of the day the corner defender/high offensive profile for Porter was on display. Throughout his BP he consistently lived on the barrel with line drive contact that carries to the middle of the field well from a quick compact turn. Porter starts from more of a grounded set up with crouch in his lower 1/2 and slightly open feet while resting the bat on his shoulder with the barrel tipped towards the ground and hands set slightly higher around ear height. He loads by lifting the bat off his shoulder using a small leg lift and hand pump with strong feel for his rhythm/timing to get to launch efficiently and get to contact. There is strength in the path with the ball jumping off the bat giving high hard contact with power in his profile. Defensively, he worked out at 3B where his hands and arm are solid showing the foundation to be a sound defender there with decent footwork, but looks to be athletic enough that he could handle a corner OF spot if he needs to move off the INF dirt.
His in game performance was even better than his workout performance as he took multiple high quality at bats showing his feel to hit while understanding the strike zone well with a quality approach. In his first plate appearance he got to a 2K count and was willing to let a FB get deep and stay inside of it to shoot it through the right side of the INF for a knock. His second trip to the plate resulted in another 2K base hit this time catching an elevated mistake on a SLD from Colt Peterson that he laced back through the middle of the field for a solid single. HIs lone below average at bat of the day came against RHP Sean McGrath of NorCal who was able to get him to go out of the strike zone and chase a SLD for a K. But, he responded in his final at bat facing McCoy Silicz getting his hands inside of a FB on the inner half of the dish and kept it fair down the 3B line to one hop past the 3B and into the OF for a double.
Porter is an Oregon State commit who currently sit at #127 on the Prep Baseball Draft HQ Top 150 Draft Board.
