Power / Speed Score
A simple calculation that divides the athlete’s Exit Velocity Max by the athlete’s 60 Yard Dash time for the given event year. For example, 98 MPH / 7.00s = 14.00.
A fastball with rise has a high percentage of backspin. When thrown up in the zone, it is more likely to generate a higher fly ball percentage. Rise+ of 100 is MLB average
Slider
Hammer+
A hammer breaking ball drops vertically with velocity through the zone, or 12-to-6 movement. Hammer+ of 100 is MLB average.
Slider
Sweep+
A sweeping breaking ball moves horizontally with velocity through the zone. Sweep+ of 100 is MLB average.
Gilbert Vargas turned in a workhorse performance on the mound for Canyon High School, showcasing poise, pitchability, and grit across a dominant seven-inning outing. The right-hander went the distance, limiting hard contact throughout the game while keeping his team in striking distance from start to finish. Despite facing adversity early—working around two unearned runs in the first inning—Vargas settled in quickly and displayed veteran composure, keeping his pitch count manageable and executing pitches when it mattered most. Vargas’ success stems from his ability to consistently fill up the strike zone and effectively sequence his pitch mix to keep hitters off balance. Throughout the outing, he showed great feel for his arsenal, mixing speeds and locations with confidence. His fastball featured heavy arm-side run, a product of his long arm action and lower ¾ arm slot, allowing him to come in on right-handed hitters and tie them up inside while also fading away from lefties. That natural movement made the pitch play up even when located middle, and Vargas wasn’t afraid to challenge hitters early in counts. Complementing his fastball, Vargas showcased an effective slider with late horizontal break, giving him a reliable secondary offering to miss barrels and expand the zone. He was able to land the slider for strikes or bury it for chase, depending on the situation, demonstrating a mature feel for pitch sequencing. While he didn’t flash overwhelming velocity, the combination of movement, command, and sequencing allowed him to navigate the lineup multiple times without giving in to hitters. Mechanically, Vargas uses a long, fluid arm swing and gets down the mound well, maximizing his lower half and extension to create deception and added life on his pitches. His stride gets low to the ground, helping him stay connected and drive his delivery toward the plate with intent. This repeatable delivery, paired with a quick tempo, kept hitters uncomfortable and unable to sit on any one pitch.

Body: 5-7, 160-pounds. Young frame with room and need for growth. Delivery: Showed some pitchability but still has a ways to go. Consistent delivery and feel on the mound his best pitching tools. Arm Action: RH. Arm works with his build and body. Overall growth and development keys to arm action enhancement. FB: T65, 62-65 mph. Commanded the fastball in the zone. Consistent release point and finish in the front. Reliable pitch in any count. SL: 57-59 mph. Slow breaking slurvey slider that will cause trouble with hitters timing. Commanded the pitch as well and shows potential to continue upwards projection of the pitch. CH: 60-63 mph. Changeup featured velocity almost identical to the fastball with less spin. Spin differential will help but the speed differential will be needed.

Body: 5-7, 160-pounds. Young frame with room and need for growth. Hit: RHH. Wide in the box setup, closed off front foot, swings a heavy bat. Sprayed the ball to both fields, barrel stayed through the zone fairly well, looked to pull outside pitches. Power: 77.00 max exit velocity Arm: RH. INF - 68.00 mph. Medium arm swing with limited speed in the front and back. Did a good job staying in line with his target and making accurate throws. Velocity needed to stay at 3B. Defense: Showed good basic fundamentals for one of the youngest players at the event. Moved pretty well and showed a projectable infield feel. Run: 8.17 runner in the 60.
