2021 MLB Draft: McGarry has routinely walked a batter per inning in his career at Virginia, but after not pitching since April 20, he got an inning against Wake Forest in a blowout and then was turned to in big games in a super regional and the College World Series, logging 14.1 innings, allowing just two runs on three hits and five walks while striking out 18. He has electric stuff, including a 95-99 fastball and dirty slider. He can shove his high-spin (2600+ rpm) fastball up in the zone and then rip an 86-87 slider with late action and depth through the zone with 2900 rpm. There his ample velocity available througout college baseball this season, but McGarry separates himself from others with highly attractive spin rates and this swing-and-miss breaking ball.

It was only one inning (the 9th) of a 17-0 Cavalier drubbing of the Deacons, but McGarry was electric with 95-99 mph heat and a dirty slider. He was super fresh in what was his first appearance since April 20 and with unhittable stuff he was the perfect choice to finish off a potential combined no-hitter started by Andrew Abbott. The power-armed right-hander was certainly worth the full attention of every scout who was still in attendance for a game approaching the 4-hour mark. He shoved his high spin (2600+ rpm) heat for a three-pitch strikeout of leadoff hitter Lucas Costello then polished off another Deac with an 86-87 mph breaker that showed late action and depth through the zone while spinning over 2900 rpm. McGarry struck out three of the four batters he faced to secure the seventh no-hitter in Virginia baseball history. There is ample velocity throughout college baseball this year (Heat Sheet Week 13), but McGarry separates himself from most others with highly attractive spin rates and a swing/miss breaking ball. Despite ugly walk totals (32 BB in 24.1 IP) this spring and a career of strike-throwing issues, he should be considered in the 5th round where fellow ACC power-arm Joe Boyle (Notre Dame) was selected last year.

Athletic, loose armed righty whose lower half is in front of his upper. Lead legs blocks really well, allowing him to create very good arm speed and an explosive fastball at times. Has good arm action, however it was consistently late coming through. Has significant shoulder tilt in his delivery, but with the rush, his arm is too late to have that much tilt. Rushing the lower half will make the arm speed up, but it is not the recipe for throwing consistent, quality strikes. For McGarry, it created a very inconsistent release point which led to control struggles; five walks in three innings pitched on this look and 38 walks over 37.1 IP this season. Would greatly benefit by working to minimize the rush, allowing the arm and the body to sync up for much more consistent control. His fastball sat 93-94, touching 95 a couple of times in the first innings, then leveled to 91-93 during the remaining of his outing. Flashed several above average cutters in the first inning at 86-87 mph, but then went to a lesser quality of breaking pitch, casting a slider at 78-82 mph in the second and third innings. Mixed in a hard changeup at 83-86 mph that showed some late dive and fade to his arm side. (Seifert)
