8/18/18 - SoCal Underclass Games - Five-foot-11, 168-pounds, large frame that is lean with defined strength in the lower half and wiry strength through the shoulders down into the arms. Johnston, the 7th ranked player in the Class of 2021 state rankings, has tools across the board that stand out and scream projection. Shows above average, fluid footwork with athletic movements as he positions himself to gather the ball and release. Shows range to both sides and aggressively attacks balls in front. Plays with rhythm and has enough arm strength to make accurate throws from all angles. At the plate Johnston shows a crouched setup that is slightly open with a low leg lift trigger to initiate his swing. Has present bat speed thanks to his fast hands and excellent spine rotation he gets from his crouched stance. Everything works in unison with rhythm. Drops hands into launch position before driving the barrel through the zone one plane. Shows the ability to drive the ball the other way along with some pull side power.
