California State Games - Yet another uncommitted catcher who has the tools to rate with and beyond others in the class who are committed. Catchers come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, some schools prefer a certain body type or size (usually not on the tall end of the spectrum). Yes Redding is 6-foot-3, and a physical 205-lbs, looks great in the uniform. He's a capable blocker with agility and quickness to block. He's a sound receiver and plays with a strong motor. The arm is up to 80 mph and he can catch/throw with competitive 2.00-2.10 times. Add to all of that his physical bat and knack for driving in runs, and you have an extremely well-rounded player.
Positional Profile: C/3B Redding has shown a pure hit tool consistently at previous events. Constant gap-to-gap hard contact.
Body: 6-3, 218-pounds. Tall and physical build, strong base.
Hit: RHH. Relaxed tall stance with feet at shoulder width. Bat is closed to his body. Big leg lift and load, whips barrel through the zone. Steps in when striding. 71.6 mph bat speed with 9 G’s of rotational acceleration.
Power: 93 max exit velocity, averaged 88.1 mph. 360' max distance.
Arm: RH. C-80 mph. Consistent hard throws on a short/long hop.
Defense: 2.00-2.11 pop times. Gets elevated into a throwing position quickly, ready to throw downhill.
ATH: 7.66 runner in the 60. 1.78 and 4.19 in the 10 and 30 yard splits.
ACG Tryout - Good defensive catcher with exceptional blocking ability for a large framed person. Threw 79 mph right on the bag from behind the dish with a 2.01-2.12 pop time. Has present power but seemed to be pulling off the ball to lift during batting practice. When locked in, Redding smokes line drives to all fields. Ran a 7.51 second 60 yard dash.
Event: Far North Preseason ID
Positional Profile: C
Physical: 6-2, 195-pounds; 4.02 30-yard, 28.8” max jump height; Long and strong with lean muscularity, frame to build on more size and strength.
Offensively: RH. EV max – 92 mph, hand speed max – 21.7 mph, bat speed max – 71.3 mph; Bat speed/hand speed and ability to execute approach for attack angle were all positive attributes, EVs were best at event with a few over 90 mph, feet just outside shoulders in even set-up, small knee lift/tuck before medium-long stride, drives back knee against front side, has leverage in swing to produce power, small load, has barrel control, strong hip turn while keeping shoulders and hands linear through contact, compact two hand high finish, accesses power in his core, swing tailored to produce extra base hit power as he develops.
Defensively: C – 77 mph, pops – 1.97-2.07; Quick exchange, feet work well together, does tend to make a fairly sizeable move to his left in the transfer, times very competitive though was set a little close to the plate, raw arm is a strong positive and have seen it on more than one occasion, compact arm stroke with 3/4 release, raw tools and skills to be an above catch/throw backstop, displayed various set-ups to receive from traditional to using each knee up/down for different locations, showed ability to beat ball to spot in multiple locations, strong soft hands, clean glove work, athletic for the position.
NorCal Uncommitted Games - Long and strong, still with some lankiness on frame, showed intriguing all-around tools and put each to use in the game. Arm is solid (75 mph, pops 2.11-2.16) and he's accurate, w/catch-throw mechanics that are still developing. Showed accuracy in workout and in game w/ability to get off good throws on difficult pitches to throw. Offensively there is real power in his future, in the middle of the field. Had two hard hit deep F8s in game play, 93.1 max EV, 67.6 mph avg bat speed.
