4/25/18 - Tall, slender build, athletic RHP w/ loose & quick arm. Struggled with command on the night as he threw 37 pitches in the first inning and lasted on 2.1 innings facing 18 batters finishing with four walks and seven earned runs in the outing. Had four wild pitches, all of them on fastballs. Uses a closed, abbreviated delivery with easy arm action. Delivery is short, at times stabs at it, and quick to the plate from a slot. Lost fastball command early in his outing as he labored through the first inning. Took something off as he tried to regain command. Fastball worked 90-93 mph, bores into LHH and shows some late life. Slider is arguably the best pitch in Montgomery’s arsenal presently. Generated swing-and-miss with the pitch albeit in limited displays. Working 82-87 mph and living 84-86 mph, the slider shows late tilt and was hard and tight. Throws the pitch with conviction and trust in the pitch. Changeup has potential to be a special pitch although he only threw five of them in his abbreviated outing. Working 83-86 mph the pitch with late sink and tailing action the pitch generated swing and miss on four of the five and the fifth was a called strike. This was Montgomery’s worst outing of the season, but he is a toolsy pitcher with clean and repeatable mechanics that had a bad day. Projects as a back-end of the rotation starter or set-up man. Likely a 7th-10th round pick.
