Slymen, a Georgia Tech commit, has been a name on our radar for some time and this game provided our first spring look at the 6’3” 190lb righty. With an over-the-top delivery, Slymen attacked hitters early with the fastball that bores in on right handed hitters. That would be his plan the entire game. While not afraid to come inside with the fastball, he showed enough command of the pitch to attack away with it as well. Touching 91 mph, the pitch lived 86-88 mph with some riding life as it enters the zone. The over-the-top arm slot paired with a significant back turn makes the fastball play up as it gets on hitters in a hurry. The fastball was the pitch of choice early in the outing. The second time through the lineup Slymen went to the slider more often which he paired with his changeup. While he collected strikeouts with all three pitches, the ability to mix pitches and eye levels proved to be too much for hitters. The slider at 76-79 mph was at times average in terms of spin and deception. He threw a handful of them that flashed sharp biting action resulting in whiffs. While the pitch is presently an average high school pitch, the “really good” ones he threw offer a glimpse of the pitches potential in the future. His changeup fell into the same category as the slider in this outing. Initially it was essentially a slower fastball, but when needed and when thrown with conviction, the changeup flashed slightly better than average. Working 76-79 mph with the pitch, it got better the more he threw it, eventually using it as a strikeout pitch to two batters and collecting whiffs. It fooled one batter enough to induce a check-swing ground out to the third baseman.
