Rocha opened the game on the bump and the compact righthander (5’9) showed a strong present pitching profile with quality present stuff while flashing a potential to profile as a long-term starter for the next level. With a smaller stature he doesn’t look the part of dominant arm, but the competitive nature, flashes of FB control/command and the potential of his SLD over the first two innings of work show his upside potential. Rocha lived at 84-88 MPH with his FB and reached back to touch an 89 on one of his last pitches of his 4.1 inning outing. The SLD worked at 74-77 MPH when he executed it correctly the pitch had a sharp bite to his glove side with some vertical depth in the movement pattern, but his feel for the offering was inconsistent. He showed a CHG twice early in the game vs. a LHH at 74-75 MPH, but both were pushed towards the plate with a noticeable slow down to his arm speed and will need future polish to maintain a starter profile for the next level. His first two innings were dominant including a pair of early K’s and faced the minimum over those two innings. But, in the third/fourth innings he scuffled a bit with the bottom of the order flashing bunt early he lost his front side working down the mound and began to miss up and in to RH hitters which resulted in multiple HBPs and BBs, but he showed the feel to make an adjustment at times throughout those two innings to make competitive pitches especially with traffic on the bases. The operation has tempo with a short quick arm action and when he maintains his front side down the mound flashes strong present control with command over his FB/SLD, but the inconsistency that appeared later in the outing shows the future polish he needs to make. There is plenty to like about this arm coming out of the San Dimas program and if he continues to build on his strong present profile there is college future for him.
