Diaz continues to trend upward with each live look at the switch-hitting shortstop. Earlier in the spring, I got a lengthy look at the RH swing, but this game provided five at bats from the LH side. I like the direction that his offensive profile is trending with a cleaner, quicker swing from the LH side showing more LVG from line to line. He is controlling the load better and showing sound rhythm/timing with high-quality swing decisions. Over those five at bats he was on the barrel in four different plate appearances including a line drive single to RF and two doubles, one down the LF line and the other to the LCF gap. I’ve been a believer of his defensive actions since my first live look at him, but with the uptick in what he is doing at the plate, I’m becoming more convinced of his offensive upside to go with a true SS long-term profile.

I've been high on the profile for Diaz since I first saw him last spring as a Soph. starting at SS on varsity and with each additional look at him the profile continues to trend up for me. At the plate he is another switch hitter who shows a sound swing from each side and has started to flash legitimate HR power from each side of the plate which can be seen from the increasing bat speed, but also the feel for keep the barrel through the zone on a leverage plane to get hard contact in the air more consistently. His actions are clean at SS where I like how the feet work and the hands are consistently soft/smooth with an arm that has solid present strength with room to add more as he adds strength to the frame. He picked up a 2K single to RF in his first at bat (from the RH side) before reaching two more times on a BB/HBP both from the LH side of the dish where he just missed a pair of FBs that he fouled straight back. The baseball toolset is strong for Diaz and if he continues to improve his athleticism/strength going forward it's an intriguing ceiling for his future.

Diaz is coming off a solid Soph. campaign at West Ranch High School where he manned the SS position full time. Making the short 30+ minute drive to Lancaster allowed Diaz to show why not only is a college level INF prospect, but flashes real potential with what he can do on the bump. Putting together a strong overall workout posting personal bests for himself across almost all of his offensive metrics including a 93 MPH max EV, 361' max distance and an 85 MPH INF arm velocity from SS that has accuracy and carry to his throws. Diaz opened the gameplay portion by dropping a single into CF and maintained a strong showing throughout as a position player. As well, Diaz has added pitching to his profile this fall looking to be a prominent reliever for the West Ranch program in spring his shows a 84-87 MPH FB with running life to the arm side that can jam RH hitters when he gets executes it. Backing up the FB with a low 70's CB the two pitch mix and operation is a bit raw at present, but there is definitely something to the upside for Diaz on the bump in the future.
