One of my favorite gamers in the class, Finney continues to do nothing but trend up as an athlete, and from a toolset perspective. The actions are prisitine with wiry strength to the 5-foot-10, 140-pound frame and there is room for more strength to be packed onto an already-twitchy body. Finney uses his ability to play almost every postion on the diamond to mitigate some R/R concern, though he embodies the 'undersized is the new 6'4' saying with a skillset that plays above his frame. There is controlled aggression to the way he takes well-sequenced hacks, peppering batting practice liners to the tune of 92-plus. The arm really works, up to 88 from the OF and 86 across the diamond, with a true CF/SS profile left on the table, especially considering the 7.00 run time he turned in (and it plays higher between the lines).
Finney continues to show off tool enhancements with 'strong follow' next to his name for several reasons. Coming off a strong season statistically for 1A State Runner-Up Kouts, Finney has shown well in our staffs' looks this summer. He did much of the same at this event, beginning with a well-rounded workout where he posted 90+ exits, an 85 mph arm from the outfield, and a 7.16 60-yard dash. The right-handed hitter uses a heavy backshift load to begin the operation, with a controlled-but-aggressive forward move and a twitchy, level bat path to pair. His shined in-game against older competition with an energetic motor to enhance quality tools and skill.
Ben Finney is a 2028 OF/SS from Kouts Middle/High School (IN) with an undersized, twitchy 5-foot-10, 130-pound frame and plenty of room to grow. The right-handed hitter swings from a closed stance with pre-pitch rhythm, using a tight inward turn of the front side to uncoil into a flat path driven by quick hands. He posted a max exit velocity of 86 mph and a 324' max distance, showing early signs of impact that should tick up as he adds strength. A 7.16 runnerwith a 24.1” vertical, Finney is a quick mover with sure hands and fundamental actions at both shortstop and in the outfield. His 79 mph infield and 82 mph outfield arm plays with carry and quickness, and his feet stand out as a defensive strength. A high-motor athlete with sneaky tools, Finney is a follow in Indiana’s '28 class.
