2028 Preseason All-State: Sleeper-Favorites

Cooper Trinkle
Indiana Scouting Director

The spring is well-underway and our coverage of baseball in the Hoosier State continues to stretch to all parts of Indiana, shining a light on prospects of all ages. The upperclassmen tend to get much of the publicity during the season, but we wanted to take a moment to shine a light on a handful of up-and-comers from a freshman class we are very excited about. Our Freshman All-State brought 100-plus 2028s to the campus of Indiana University this past winter, and the event provided us the opportunity to get to know these future stars, along with giving players access to our unrivaled data capturing technologies, and updated metrics to their very own Prep Baseball recruiting profile.

A handful of big winners were recognized following the conclusion of this event, check back to find the top 2028 hitters at this link, and a glimpse of some future name-to-know arms from the 2028 class at this link.

Several slam-dunk prospects from this event are highlighted at the links above, and various other ranked 2028's received buzz this winter after strong showings at our various Preseason ID events. Today - we pull out our crystal ball in hopes of predicting the future. Below are several prospects that have garned our staffs' interest for one reason or another. Some show projectable, athletic bodies that we know are just shortly away from a major toolset elevation. Others show awesome actions that look the part of a next-level prospect, but are just behind physically - for now. Regardless - find 22 of my sleeper-favorites from this class to elevate their game and make noise in the 2028 class, listed below in alphabetical order...

Callum Birdzell SS / 2B / CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL, IN / 2028

Highly projectable 6-foot-3, 175-pound frame and a polished look for his age. The right-handed hitter is a smooth mover at the dish with a more linear operation and a direct path that should louden with strength gains. He recorded an 87 mph max exit velocity and 306’ max distance, showing early signs of impact. Defensively, Birdzell moves with easy pace, showing on-time feet, a playable transfer, and a clean arm at 76 mph, fitting the mold of a future left-side defender. He’s a 7.25 runner with a 25.2” vertical, and his combination of athleticism, length, and feel makes him a big follow in Indiana’s 2028 class.

Jack Bradford C / 3B / Warsaw Community High School, IN / 2028

2028 C with a stocky 5-foot-11, 160-pound frame and one of the more polished overall catching profiles at PAS Freshmen ‘25. The right-handed hitter starts from a wider base with a well-paced load, working into a loose-wristed stroke that stays on-plane with above-average bat speed for his class. A heavy forward move is shown that leads to some ambush contact, but does lead to some inconsistencies as well. He recorded a 92 mph max exit velocity, 74.8 mph average, and 305’ max distance. Behind the dish, Bradford posted 2.18–2.25 pop times with a shorter arm action (73 mph), showing a fast, athletic transfer, and works as a comfortable 1KD receiver with above-average hands for the age. 7.56 runner

Henry Cahill RHP / 3B / Noblesville, IN / 2028

Cahill is a 28 RHP from traditional pitching-power Noblesville with a strong 5-foot-11, 180-pound build. Working exclusively from the stretch, Cahill uses a stable lower half to maintain balance through an inward-turn lift, uncoiling into a controlled, athletic move down the slope. He operates with a loose, quick arm that gets on top of a 3/4 slot, and he ran his fastball up to 82 mph with heavy arm-side run (T1989 rpm). His 68–70 mph slider shows solid shape and projects as a future swing-and-miss pitch (T2299 rpm), while the 73–75 mph changeup shows fade. 7.27 runner

Andrew Confer OF / RHP / CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL, IN / 2028

Confer owns a long-levered, future-physical 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame and loud upside from the left side of the plate. The left-handed hitter works from a taller stance with a natural, heavy-at-times forward move, showing a loose-wristed swing that holds big power potential (92 max EV | 277’ max distance). At times, he can spin off and lose direction, but the strength stands out most. In the outfield, Confer shows above-average arm strength for his age (80 mph) and moves well for his size. A 7.35 runner with a 19.3” vertical, Confer brings a high-ceiling offensive profile with tools that should trend up as he adds strength and refines his swing direction.

Asher Curnutt RHP / 2B / Center Grove, IN / 2028

Curnutt is an athlete from Center Grove with a 5-foot-11, 155-pound frame and big upside on the mound. The right-hander operates from a simple delivery with a dynamic move down the slope, showing athleticism and a loose, quick arm that works to a high ¾ slot. His fastball sits 78–81 with some life (T2129 rpm) and advanced feel for the zone. Curnutt flashes a well-shaped 67–69 mph curveball with two-plane break, a sharper 69–70 mph slider that profiles as a future swing-and-miss offering, and a 70–73 mph changeup with fading action and polish. A 7.28 runner with a 22.8” vertical, Curnutt’s clean operation, athleticism, and feel to spin make him a high-follow arm in Indiana’s 2028 class.

Jackson Denny OF / 2B / Mooresville, IN / 2028

Denny holds a 5-foot-10, 170-pound athletic frame and one of the more dynamic athletic profiles in the class. Offensively, the right-handed hitter works from a crouched stance with a small load and leg lift stride, showing quick hands and a level path that produced a 91 mph max exit velocity, 79.3 average, and 292’ max distance. His hand speed stands out most, and as strength gains come, his offensive impact should tick up. In the outfield, Denny is a twitchy, athletic mover with fundamental defensive actions and a very solid 83 mph arm for his age. 6.97 runner

Mitchell Finelli OF / RHP / Brebeuf Jesuit Prep, IN / 2028

A long-limbed, 6-foot-3, 165-pounder w big upside as an athlete. At the plate, the right-handed hitter features a long-levered swing that holds power potential, producing a 90 mph max exit velocity and 81.9 average. His arm is his best tool, reaching 82 mph from the outfield, and it translates well to the mound. Finelli is an awesome mover down the slope with a clean delivery and looseness throughout, sitting 74–77, T78 mph with the fastball, for now, and showing feel for both a 62–65 mph breaking ball and a changeup at 68–70 mph. With continued physical growth, Finelli is a strong candidate to make big velo jumps in the near future.

Ben Finney OF / SS / Kouts Middle/High School, IN / 2028

Ben Finney is an undersized, twitchy 5-foot-10, 130-pounder w plenty of room to grow w maturity. The right-handed hitter swings from a closed stance with pre-pitch rhythm in the hands, using a tight inward turn of the front side to uncoil into a flat path driven by quick hands. He posted a max exit velocity of 86 mph and a 324' max distance, showing early signs of impact that should tick up as he adds strength. A 7.16 runner with a 24.1” vertical, Finney is a quick mover in all facets with sure hands and fundamental actions at both shortstop, and in the outfield. His 79 mph infield and 82 mph outfield arm plays with carry and quickness, and his feet stand out as a defensive strength. A high-motor athlete with sneaky, developing tools and evident skill already.

Carson Frome RHP / North, IN / 2028

Lean, projectable w maturity, 5-foot-10, 140-pound frame and a delivery built around easy effort. He works from an overhead pump into a tall lift, creating quality hip-to-shoulder separation for his age as he gets to heel strike & a long, uninterrupted arm follows to a 3/4 slot. The fastball sits 78–80 mph, T81, showing feel, carry, and flashes of arm-side run. His 65–68 mph curveball flashes slurvey shape, and he also spins a 63–65 mph sweeping slider that will need to firm. The changeup (68–69 mph) shows promising heavy fade, rounding out a four-pitch mix with upside. With physical growth and continued development, Frome is a young arm to keep tabs on from So. Indiana.

Zac Glander SS / RHP / Noblesville , IN / 2028

Zac Glander is a 2028 2-way with a lean 5-foot-9, 145-pound frame and plenty of projection. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts in a slightly crouched stance, using a small takeaway load that matches a forward move, though he can drift at times. The swing is loose and level with a clean path and plays w advanced hand-eye, and strength gains will pay dividends in the box. Defensively, Glander is a smooth, athletic mover with on-time feet, body control, and soft hands, showing a playable transfer and polish for his age. His arm is his best tool, working from a clean swing with life and carry at 80 mph across the INF, and while he didn’t pitch at this event, there's reason to believe he could trend toward two-way potential.

Deryan Gordon OF / LHP / Churubusco Jr-Sr High School, IN / 2028

Gordon is a L/L OF from Churubusco with a strong, compact 5-foot-9, 185-pound frame and polished offensive actions for his age. The left-handed hitter shows loose, climbing hands in the swing that work to the top of the ball, staying on-plane with strength. There’s a noticeable maturity to the swing mechanics, and his 92 mph max exit velocity supports the advanced feel for contact. He moves well for his build with a 7.42 60, and added foot-speed could elevate his offensive ceiling even more. Defensively, he’s an athletic outfielder with a clean 79 mph arm from the left side.

Slade Hodges 1B / OF / Noblesville High School, IN / 2028

Slade is a 6-foot-1, 185-pounder that projects to be physical. The left-handed hitter shows a quiet upper half in the load with a smaller backshift into a heavier forward move, staying behind the ball with a firm front leg. His hands work direct with a high-turn, creating a clean, controlled swing that produced a 90 mph max exit velocity and 299' peak distance, swing finishes high allowing for some natural lift. At first base, Hodges shows soft hands and above average footwork, though he’ll need to continue building arm strength (67 mph INF velo) to expand positional versatility. Solid foundational tools and a frame that hints at more power to come.

Remington Johnson SS / RHP North Posey, IN / 2028

'Remy' brings a lean, undersized 5-foot-6, 135-pound frame with advanced feel for the game. Offensively - it is a really athletic operation, utilizing a small leg lift and high-handed load that gets him into a quick, tight turn as the barrel works on a clean path. The 83 mph max exit velocity and 285’ max distance suggest room to grow as strength comes. Defensively, Johnson separated himself as the top defender at the event in my eyes, flashing elite infield actions, advanced glovework, and a fast, electric-for-84 mph arm across the diamond. Actions and instincts stand out—he plays the game fast, and offers a clean look on the mound w a fastball that reaches into the low-80s.

Chase Marsh SS / RHP / East Central High, IN / 2028

Chase Marsh, a 2028 RHP/SS from East Central, is a high-waisted athlete with intriguing two-way potential. At the dish, he swings it from the right side with a short, direct path—his knob works across his chest and finishes high, creating a contact-oriented approach with some barrel feel present. He moves well defensively with athleticism and a clean arm across the diamond (73 mph INF velo), tho showed more arm stength in the bullpen. On the mound, Marsh features a dynamic delivery that gradually builds pace into an athletic drop-and-drive move. He works from a loose, over-the-top arm slot and fills up the zone with a fastball that sits 78–80 mph (T81) and carries through. He flashes feel for two breaking balls—a 64–65 mph slurvy slider and a 64–68 mph cutter that mimics the slider shape.

Cass Omlor RHP / Zionsville , IN / 2028

Omlor is a 28 RHP from Zionsville with a long-limbed, lean 6-foot, 155-pound frame that holds significant projection. He’s a loose, clean mover on the mound with uphill shoulders and dynamic qualities in the delivery. The arm works uninterrupted and quick, producing a fastball up to 80 mph (79–80) that comes out with jump. Omlor shows feel to spin a 67–70 mph slider with bite and tunnels a well-shaped 70–71 mph changeup. With more strength, there’s a chance for big velo gains in the future.

Graedan Robinson 3B / RHP / Bloomington South, IN / 2028

Long-levered, projectable 6-foot-3, 170-pound frame with a ton of intrigue. Offensively, he’s a wiry athlete with a rotational swing, using an inward turn before uncoiling with intent to do damage. He can get off-plane at times, but the levers and whip in the barrel suggest power upside as he continues to pack on strength. 90 mph max EV | 290’ max distance. Defensively, Robinson shows solid actions at third with a loose, 84 mph arm that really works—his best present tool. The foot speed will need to improve, but the tools + frame combo make him a high-upside follow

Austin Semmler LHP / Terre Haute South, IN / 2028

Austin Semmler is a 2028 LHP from Terre Haute South with a super projectable, 6-foot, 145-pound frame and an exciting ceiling on the mound. He works with an easy, repeatable delivery and loose, whippy arm action. Semmler shows an athletic lift to the top of his balance point with a slight hesitation before riding the slope with dynamic balance and a quiet head throughout. His fastball shows late arm-side life, sitting 74–76 mph (T76) with advanced spin metrics (2162 avg rpm) for the current velocity, and there's more velocity on the way. His 63–64 mph curveball is a separator—tight with depth and excellent feel for his age (2221 avg rpm). The changeup shows fade with fastball intent and low spin, rounding out a quality three-pitch mix.

Brody Stevenson 1B / RHP / Pendleton Heights, IN / 2028

Stevenson, a 2028 RHP/1B from Pendleton, stands 5-foot-11, 170 pounds with projection as he matures physically. The delivery is my favorite thing about him to date—clean, athletic, and efficient with dynamic balance and a quiet head throughout. His fastball sits 76–77 mph (T77) and plays up with high spin (2002 avg rpm) and IVB. The breaking ball has slurvey shape at 68–70 and he also flashes a slider at 68–71 (T2189 rpm) with makings of a future out-pitch. He mixes a straight changeup at 71–73. Offensively, he’s a fluid, smooth mover with a short swing that works behind the baseball and a path that shows some length. Starts in a balanced stance with tall back elbow and posted an 88 mph max exit velocity. Strong two-way follow, but mound potential stands out.

Paul Stewart LHP / OF / Noblesville High School, IN / 2028

Stewart is another young Noblesville arm we like, with a 5-foot-9, 157-pound athletic frame and an easy, fluid operation. He works from a clean left-handed arm action that projects to hold velocity jumps in the future. Stewart shows a balanced delivery and fills up the zone with strikes. His fastball sits 76–78 mph (T79), and he pairs it with two quality breakers — a 66–67 mph curveball and a 67–68 mph slider — both playing with sweeping shape. He also mixes a 73 mph changeup.

Cy Street SS / RHP / North Central, IN / 2028

The North Central product is a twitchy athlete with more strength than his 5-foot-7, 152-pound frame would suggest. He brings fast-twitch ability to both sides of the ball, showing quick feet and dynamic infield actions with an 85 mph arm across—one of the better infield defenders at this event. Offensively, he hits from a short setup, landing early and climbing with the hands in load before working on a direct path to the ball. Posted an 86 mph max EV with a 294’ peak distance. On the mound, Street throws from a short, quick arm action, sitting 77–80 (T81) on the fastball with some carry. His 63–64 mph curve shows shape, and his 66 mph slider offers bite. Mixes in a firm 73–75 mph changeup with some feel.

Tyler Vo OF / SS / Andrean High School, IN / 2028

Vo, a 2028 athlete from the Region, brings athleticism and twitch to the field with a 6.94 60 and 24.7” vertical, both standout metrics amongst his peers. At the plate, he hits from a wider base and gets into a heavy backshift with a big forward move, creating stretch before the hands work direct through a linear, contact-driven operation. His 88 mph max exit velocity and 261’ peak distance point to more strength than his frame suggests. In the outfield, Vo is an athletic, quick-twitch mover, and while the arm lacks present strength, his athletic profile and twitch give him some ceiling.

Caleb Wilson SS / OF / Crown Point, IN / 2028

Caleb Wilson is a LHH SS that I really like in this class. He hails from Crown Point, and the Bulldogs continue to churn out prospects at a rapid rate. He has an athletic build and one of the more polished swings of any '28 at this event. The LHH stays balanced through a toe tap stride, working behind the ball with a quick, on-plane barrel that shows 90 mph max EV and a peak distance of 308’. The swing is clean with launch quickness present and the offensive profile will only get louder with strength and speed gains. Wilson defends with sure hands, feel for the exchange, and short, quick arm (80 mph OF, 75 mph INF), though the feet can be too narrow at the catch at times on the dirt. Solid athlete with upside, turned in a 7.34 60 and 23.2” vertical.
