Kelly, a 2018 right-handed hitting catcher, stands at weighs , ran a 7.84 60. Offensively- Starts with a narrow, balanced square lower half, with some bend in both knees, with the hands in front of and slightly above the back shoulder with the barrel of the bat 45-degrees from the ground. Gets into the launch phase of the swing with a moderate lift of the front foot, minimal stride forward, while the hands are loaded straight back getting well outside the back shoulder. Showed an ability to pepper the ball from the pull side to the center of the field, especially on pitches to the lower third of the zone. Allows the front hip to pull out prematurely causing the hands to cut-off during the extension phase of the swing. Recorded an exit velocity of 81 MPH on the day. Defensively- Works from an athletic triangular base during the primary stance. Received the ball with a quiet hand and minimal body movement. On throws to second base, transfer the ball from the center of the body, but allows the throwing arm to get long and wrap around the back shoulder. From the power position to the release of the ball, pulls the lead arm horizontally causing the throwing arm to cast away. Throws would improve the accuracy and carry along with the arm velocity of 72 MPH and top pop time of 2.15, if the transfer could be more direct and more leg drive and torque could be created.
