NY Games (June 25-27, 2017)
Athletic frame at 5-foot-10, 150 pounds that projects well at the next level, ran a 60 time at 7.49 which needs to improve to stay in the middle-infield. Offensively - loose and fluid swing, brings bat through the zone on a level plane and gets full extension on follow through with an exit velocity of 71 MPH. Easy to see him adding power as he grows and learns to engage his lower body. Defensively - smooth and fluid with soft hands, uses advanced footwork to gain momentum for throws across infield at 76 MPH. Pitching - late action on fastball at 78-80 MPH induces consistent, weak contact, mixes in curveball with tight 2-to-7 shape at 68-69 MPH, uses downward plane to keep change-up at 70-71 MPH low in the zone.
DeStefano stands 5-foot-8, 140-pounds with some next-level projections. At the plate he swings from the left-side, back load on the pitch, slight pause in his hands before he attacks the ball. Signs of some early juice projection from short fluid bat-path, athletic full finish. Exit velocity off a tee was 79 MPH. Defensively, active lower half, attacks the ball with a more direct path, open glove with a quick transfer and release from a high 3/4 slot. As he develops he should continue to smooth out his fielding mechanics. On the mound, overall clean mechanics with a long stride, high-3/4 slot release with a fastball sitting 77-78 MPH. Fastball has some late depth to the arm-side, but shows more late life during full extension to his opposite arm. Change up sat 69-70 with a more gradual fade to the arm-side.
DeStefano, a 2019 left-handed hitting middle infielder, stands at 5-foot-8 and weighs in at 128 pounds, ran a 7.64 60. Offensively- Begins with a slightly crouched square stance weight even with the hands above the back shoulder with the barrel of the bat nearly parallel to the ground. Initiates the swing with a slight shift of weight to the back side while lifting the front foot and hands loaded straight back of the shoulder and the barrel of the bat nearly straight up and down. During batting practice, stayed mostly from center to the pull side line, driving the all down in the zone well to the right side. Recorded an exit velocity of 75 MPH on the day, but tends to arm bar the lead side which causes a pulling action through the hitting zone and cut off extension. With more extension will increase the exit velocity significantly. Defensively- Fluid athletic movements from the position. Keeps the feet moving with a pre-pitch movement, approaches the ball aggressively but showing quality body control. Fields the ball out in front of the body creating hps using short/choppy steps. Funnels the ball to the center of the body, a bit low, using a longer arm action when transferring causing some arm drag. Throws were accurate but could show more carry with a more in sync arm action with the lower half. Recorded an arm velocity of 71 MPH on the day. Pitching- Starts center rubber with both hands chin height. Gets to the gathered position by taking a drop step towards the first base line while the pivot drags to the first base side of the rubber, creating an inward rotation of the hips while the head remains fairly still and locked in on the plate. Separation is clean and quick, creating a longer arm action. Hard on the landing with a loose front side, significantly causing lose of extension on release and command to the lower third of the zone. Fastball topped out at 75 MPH, but with a stronger front side and more drive from the backside, that number should be able to increase at least 5 MPH. Changeup was recorded at 71 MPH, showing quality depth, but could use more of a differential from the fastball. Curveball, topping out at 63 MPH, would also benefit from more extension on release which create tighter spin and show more downward action. With mechanical adjustments could turn out to have plus stuff on the mound.
