Comments
Pierson is a 5-foot-10 196 pound left-handed OF/LHP. Athletic frame with room to fill out. Ran a 4.66 home-to-1B. Offensively- stands feet shoulder width apart, with the bat straight up. Brings it on to shoulder as he starts his load. Quite toe tap load; aggressive lower half and quick hands get the bat through the zone. One handed finish; recorded an exit velocity of 83 MPH. Defensively- In the OF aggressively; uses a quick side step instead of crow hop. Short arms the ball on throws, recorded arm velocity of 74 MPH (Up 4 MPH from 2/20/17). Fine tuning his crowhop will allow for the body to land in a more linear direction to his target. Pitching- Starts from the stretch on the third base side of the rubber. Knee goes straight up, slightly above hip, and drives towards home plate. Falls forward and slightly towards third base. Short arms fastball, which sits 69-70 MPH and tops at 71 MPH. Better separation will lead to increase in velocity. Slows up on curveball, which leads to loopy break and ranges 63-64 MPH.
Preseason All-State (February 20, 2017)
Pierson stands in at 5-foot-11, 215-pounds with a thick and athletic frame. Ran a 7.61 – 60. Offensively- Lefty sets up square to the pitcher with his feet shoulder width apart. His knees are slightly bent while his torso is leaning in towards the plate. The hands are held high above the back shoulder using circular pre-pitch bat movement prior to the delivery. On pitch his trigger is quiet and simple step forward while his hands move back and down slightly to get into the hitting position. Has quick hands into the hitting zone with a good upward barrel path throughout into a mid-body one handed finish. Shows good lower body rotation getting whole frame involved with swing while keeping his weight locked on front side. Demonstrated good contact hitting the ball up the middle and pull side. Recorded an exit velocity of 83 MPH. Defensively- Footwork could be quicker getting to the baseball. Shows good crow hop mechanics getting body weight involved in throw. Arm swing could be longer with a higher release point to help distance and accuracy. Recorded a positional arm velocity of 70 MPH. Pitching- From the stretch sets up slightly open and has a quick knee raise above his hip crease to get into his power position. Has good separation by landing closed with his foot strike and quick arm action into a ¾ release point. Collapses on front side, causing finish to 3B line. Looser and longer arm action will help velocity gains. Fastball was in 68-70 MPH range with a 12/6 action Curveball in the 51-53 MPH range with too much of a differential for hitters at higher levels. Change showed arm-side fade at 62 MPH. 2020 grad that has some framework to set up long term development.
