The 2023 inf/RHP showed his power game on both sides of the ball this week in both the workout session and in the games. During the workout Smith reached exit speeds up to 99 mph during the BP session by using his 27 mph hand speed and strong rotational acceleration according to Blast Motion. He also showed smooth defensive actions with a strong arm with radar gun readings at 85 mph across the diamond. Smith jumped on the mound during the games and showed a fastball working up to 89 mph with spin in the 2400’s giving it good hop through the zone. When Smith is on the attack with the fastball he has a chance to really miss bats in the future with good hand speed and more velocity in the tank.
Positional Profile: 3B/RHP
Body: 6-foot-1, 200-pound physically impressive frame with present strength.
Hit: RHH. At the plate starts with an open stance and upright posture. Strong leg kick stride with good weight stack onto the back leg. Gets the most out of the lower half with strong linear push off the back leg into a firm front leg. Manipulates the lower half well to match plane with pitches down in the zone. Slight uphill bat path and works the ball up into the air. Pull side approach with true power potential. Hands work very quick through the zone and has good overall bat speed. Strong rotational acceleration metrics according to Blast Motion sensor.
Power: 89 mph exit velocity off the tee and 99 mph exit velocity during BP.
Run: 7.06 runner in the 60.
Delivery: On the mound uses short and simple footwork around the rubber working to a high balance point. Strong weight stack onto the back leg with solid push off the rubber. Works from the first base side of the rubber and strides directionally down the center of the mound into a firm plant leg. Solid momentum head towards the plate with heavy body rotation off the plant leg. Hand breaks from the glove at the top of the delivery. Smooth mechanics with ball coming out of the hand explosively with slight effort.
Arm Action: RH. High ¾ arm slot with a clean and loose arm action with good hand speed.
FB: 85-87 mph, strong spin metrics with the fastball up to 2450 RPM and strong riding life through the zone.
SL: 71 mph, slurvy shape with solid spin and developing feel.
CB: 64-66 mph, bigger two plane break with more east west action and developing spin.
CH: 76-77 mph, kills the spin efficiently with arm side fading action and fastball hand speed.
