2026 RHP Ben Sommerfeldt was the clubhouse leader in fastball velocity as the 6-foot-2, 178-pound right-hander ran it up to 88.6mph. An intriguing uncommitted 2026 arm in Ontario, Sommerfeldt’s fastball sat 87-88mph (2380+) from an over-the-top slot that helps him create a vertical shape to the breaking ball at 76-78mph (2550+). The Ontario Yankees product also featured a changeup at 81mph (5.5” IVB/17.0” HM). On the positional side, Sommerfeldt posted a peak EV of 94.6mph, outfield velocity of 93mph and 30-yard dash of 4.00s. Overall, another good showing from Sommerfeldt who continues to trend upwards on the mound and it’s an arm our staff is interested to see outdoors this coming summer.
9/14/24
Sommerfeldt put together the best showcase amongst upperclassmen, starting with his bullpen on Friday where he sat 85-87mph (2450+). The 6-foot, 180-pound right-hander also featured a breaking ball at 74-76mph and splitter at 77-79mph. The right-handed hitter was one of the stronger players during BP, posting a peak exit velocity of 94.4mph and distance of 321ft (50% Hard Hit). From the outfield Sommerfeldt was up to 87mph which was best on the day. There are tools with some strength in his game and he’ll be a player to watch next summer on the Yankees 18U Team.
