‘28 RHP/OF Westin Merritt continues to standout as a top player in the class and Monday may have been the best we’ve seen him to-date on the mound. Continues to grow and has added some size, now standing at 6-foot-1, 185-pounds and the strength translated to all areas of his game. The Whitby Canadians right-hander sat 85-86mph (2300+) with the fastball and was able to land all his pitches for strikes. Merritt also featured a curveball at 68-70mph, slider at 70-72mph and changeup at 72-76mph. With the bat, the right-handed hitter put up a max exit velocity of 89.7mph and max distance of 254ft. A close-follow this summer in the Durham Region and will be representing Prep Baseball Canada again at the 2025 Best of the West tournament.

Merritt has established himself as one of the top 2028 prospects in Ontario and it was easy to see why on Monday as he flashed his arm strength and power potential at the plate. The 6-foot-1, 178-pound JFG alum has added some noticeable strength since the summer and found the barrel throughout both his rounds with line drives to the middle of the cage. The Whitby Canadians outfielder produced a peak exit velocity of 94.7mph and peak distance of 326ft. His outfield velocity of 83mph was also the best amongst 2028 grads. A name to know in Ontario’s 2028 class who’s played some good baseball on big stages at the Best of the West and Junior Future Games.

Merritt was the 2023 OBA Player of the Year and our staff quickly found out why as he impressed at the 15U Best of the West Tournament competing up an age group. The body/strength stands out at 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, as well as his arm strength that allow him to excel on the mound and behind the dish. The Whitby Canadians product worked up to 82mph and 73mph behind the dish. It’ll be interesting to see which side of his game takes the first big jump, but Meritt’s tools continue to shine each time we see him.

Our staff got its first look at Westin Merritt early in May at the 15U Best of the West tournament and the 2023 OBA Player of the Year quickly asserted himself as one of the top 2028 prospects in the province. We got another look this past week as he pitched up an age-group against 15U players and went 2.1 innings. Lacked command out of the gate with several walks in the first inning but didn’t allow a ball in play during the inning as he picked up all three outs via the strikeout. The body already physically stands out at 6-foot, 160-pounds and the fastball sat 79-81, while touching a couple 82s, and paired it with a breaking ball at 64-67mph. The arm talent is undeniable and will be a fun watch throughout his high school career.

2028 RHP/C Westin Merritt was the lone 2028 on Prep Baseball’s 15U National Team and was one of the most intriguing arms from the team to take the mound. There’s plenty to dream on with the 2023 OBA Player of the Year as he already stands at 6-foot, 160-pounds and his fastball sat 78-80 T81 in his lone outing against a strong Victoria Eagles squad. He moves well on the mound with a clean, quick arm and already shows the ability to spin a quality breaking ball in the 67mph range. Merritt isn’t even in high school yet and will be a name to watch when Ontario rolls out its first 2028 rankings in the fall.
