9/14/14 Claus has been down in velocity most of the summer and fall from his peak when he sat 85-86 late in the spring, but continues to be extremely effective. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound righty sat 80-81 from a 3/4 arm slot with solid command of three pitches. Claus struck out five using his 71 mph slider and an occasional 73 mph changeup to keep hitters off balance. Claus allowed one run on two hits and showed command of all four quadrants of the plate. Two days following the completion of his outing Claus announced his commitment to play his college baseball at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP).
7/20/14 Claus worked four scoreless innings striking out six while not allowing a runner to advance past second base. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound uncommitted senior sat 81-83 from a high 3/4 arm slot with some arm side run to his fastball. Claus also displayed command of a 68 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation, a 73 mph slider and a 75 mph changeup. The righty was down a tick in velocity having sat in the mid-80s for much of his 9-1 high school season. Claus has a projectable frame and his fastball shows late life that resulted in plenty of swing thrus from opposing hitters.
6/18/14 Claus sat 82-84 from a high 3/4 arm slot with late life to his fastball, especially up in the zone. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound righty displayed an improved 73 mph curveball with tight 11/5 rotation and a 74 mph changeup that he has begun to throw on a more regular basis. Claus worked three innings striking out two.
5/30/14 Claus was neary perfect the 1st trip through the order. The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder pounded the strike zone with a FB that sat 82-84 and touched 85. Claus flashed some arm side run to his 4-seamer and the pitch showed late life up in the zone. The righty also showed a much better 11/5 breaking ball that sat 70-73. Claus did not show a changeup and saw his velocity drop significantly in his 4th and final inning of work.
5/13/14 Claus had some playoff energy early sitting 86-87 in the 1st inning from a 3/4 arm slot. Claus went on to work 82-84 in the 2nd & 3rd innings, and 80-82 for the remainder of the game. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound junior made a living pound right handed hitters running his fastball under the hands of RHH in the lineup. Claus struggled with command of his 70 mph 11/5 breaking curveball early in the game, he found better command and tighter rotation as the game wore on. Claus will need to continue to develop his 72 mph change up which he used sparingly during the course of his CG, nine strikeout effort.
2/23/13 Claus is a 6-foot-3, 220-pound sophomore who showcased a two tier curveball out of a high 3/4 arm slot at 70 mph. Coupled with an 81 mph fastball that had cutter action to it and a 69 mph changeup, Claus has a compliment of three quality pitches he can command. Claus has the potential to develop physically and add significant velocity moving forward. He is a high follow in the Class of 2015.
