3.28.17: Whitten has a lankier frame that he can add to as he develops. Shorter, loose arm that is quick, showed some effort at times, three-quarters arm slot. Fastball was 90-92 in the first inning with late armside run when thrown to armside. Fastball was 89-91 touching 93 in the third and was 88-91, touching 93 in the fourth. Change-up was straighter with good armspeed, 82-83. Curveball had sharp 10/4 break and some armspeed, 76-78. True slider was 79-81 with good armspeed. Overthrew a bit in the first inning, struggling with command, much better in second to fourth innings.
7/16/16 - RHP Kyle Whitten (Osbourn Park HS, VA) started and logged three innings and allowed three walks and a hit. He lost command of his stuff in the second inning, but was able to wriggle out of jams with the help of his defense. His fastball sat 87-89 mph with some occasional cut and sink to it. He mixed in a rolling curveball at 70-71, but flashed a couple harder breaking balls with more lateral action at 74. His changeup was firm with some fade in the low 80s.
6/25/16 - + RHP Kyle Whitten (Osbourn Park HS, VA), a Virginia recruit, has a skinny frame at 6-foot-2, 163 pounds. He pitches with an up tempo delivery and a quick arm. He hides the ball behind his hip well, making it tough for hitters to pick up. His curveball has 11/5 shape and depth at 69-73, though it was inconsistent. He sat 86-89 with his fastball and flashed a slider at 77. In his three innings of work, Whitten allowed three hits and two walks while striking out three.
3.21.16: Whitten is a lanky righty that throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a rushed drop and drive delivery. He has a short arm action that is loose with a quick arm, generating velocity with some effort. His shoulders are uphill as he strides to a square landing before falling off as he finishes. Whitten’s fastball had good plane and some late sinking action. It touched 87, sitting 83-86. He showed a late, 12/6 breaking ball that was 71.
2.15.15 Whitten has a lanky frame and throws from a high three-quarters slot. He has a short, loose arm action and a very quick armstroke. He has drop and drive mechanics with a smooth rhythm. His shoulders are uphill and on line, and he creates good angle on his pitches before falling off a bit at finish. Whitten’s four seam fastball sat at 84 mph with little movement and his two seamer sat 82 mph with good action to it. He threw an outstanding, sharp slider with full armspeed that ran 70-74 mph. He also threw a fading change-up with full armspeed that ran 75-77 mph. Whitten threw all of his pitches with outstanding command.
11/8/14: Whitten is a very projectable, 6-foot-2, 160 pound pitcher with an athletic frame. He throws from a high three-quarters slot with smooth mechanics and easy effort to go with his quick arm. His shoulders are uphill and closed at power position and he strides down the mound on line. Whitten sat 82-84 and touched 85 with his fastball. His four seamer was a bit flat but his two seamer has heavy run on it and he demonstrated really good feel of the pitch. Whitten threw a slider from 71-72 with late break that was very good when down in the zone, but he was a bit erratic with his command at times. He also threw a change-up at 74-75 with good fading action that he kept down in the zone.
8/12/19: Showed an assortment of pitches: two-seam sinker at 86-89 mph, four-seam fastball at 90-92 with some ride, 83-84 change of pace with abrupt fade, 80-81 slider and a 74 mph rolling curveball. The five-pitch mix was affected by his below average command which is likely due to his arm action and the effort in his head dunk delivery. Whitten walked 15 in 16.1 IP this summer. (Seifert)
