Figueroa came into this game with the highest batting average on Bonita Vista, well above .350, and by the end of the day, he bumped it up to an even .400 after a 3-for-4 performance, driving in a run with each hit and coming just a home run shy of the cycle. The sophomore, playing his first year at the varsity level, has been nothing short of incredible for the Barons, and I was excited to finally get a look at him. From his very first swing, it was obvious how much damage he can do to a baseball. He steps into the box looking loose and relaxed, with an open stance and easy hands, giving off a ton of comfort and confidence. Then he coils into a high leg kick, loads power into his back leg, and torques his hips through the ball while keeping his hands free and controlled, resulting in loud, solid contact to all fields. His swing screams one thing: hard-hit baseballs. What impressed me just as much was his advanced bat-to-ball skills, allowing him to not only drive pitches in the zone but also adjust and make solid contact on pitches outside of it. As Figueroa continues to put together a huge sophomore season, it’s definitely going to be worth tracking how he continues to develop and just how high his ceiling can get moving forward.
