Gunn continued his dominant spring with another strong outing, tossing 5 scoreless innings while allowing just 2 hits, striking out 5, and walking 1 on 69 pitches (43 strikes). The uncommitted senior has now logged 23 innings without allowing an earned run in 2026, which is a strong follow-up from 2025, where he posted a 7-2 record with an ERA of 2.44. He’s showing a level of consistency when he takes the mound right now, and it’s giving the Patriots a great chance to win each time he is out there. He worked 86-89 mph, touching 92 (2x), and did an excellent job mixing his full arsenal to keep hitters off balance. The curveball (71-75) showed multiple shapes and flashed sharp bite, while the changeup (73-75) was used effectively in a variety of counts. Gunn showed a strong feel for sequencing, often pairing the fastball with the curveball on the inner half to right-handed hitters, creating deception and generating swings and misses. The key to his success has been his ability to command the baseball and trust all three pitches. His strike-throwing has been consistent all spring, reflected in an impressive 34-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and he looks increasingly comfortable leaning on his secondary offerings to enhance the effectiveness of his fastball. With the way he’s locating and mixing speeds, Gunn continues to prove he’s one of the steadier and more reliable uncommitted arms in the region.
Gunn was dominant in his 7 innings of work against Del Norte. He struck out 12 Nighthawk batters in his 100 pitch outing. He started a bit slow in the 1st surrendering two hits and a run. His FB in the inning was 85-87 mph and he was having trouble commanding his SL for a strike. After working out of trouble, he returned for the 2nd inning and became completely locked in. His FB ticked up to 86-88 mph and remained there for the rest of the contest. He hit 90 on two different occasions. He also was able to really zone in with his off speed pitches which gave him a true 4-pitch mix. His SL started to find the zone at 77-79 mph and was a perfect tunnel from his FB and arm side running CH at 77-78 mph. His CB had similar action as his SL with a slower tick in speed by about 3-4 mph and was another weapon for him that he primarily used in early counts. Gunn’s composure on the mound is what has stood out to me the most in the two times I’ve seen him. He never seems rattled out there no matter the situation and always seems to be in control and dictating the pace of the game. He has swing and miss stuff with all four pitches and is someone a coach can rely on to give length and work deep into a ballgame. In now five appearances this spring and 23 innings pitched, Gunn is 1-0 with a 0.91 ERA for the Patriots and continues to prove why he is the ace of their staff.
Gunn started the game on the mound, where it didn’t get off on the best of notes. He was in a jam early with bases loaded and 1 out due to some defensive struggles and free passes. However, he was able to escape it getting a 4-6-3 double play, after allowing 1 unearned run. He would go on to pitch 2 more innings where his line ended at 3 IP, 2 H, 3 R (none earned), and 2 K. Through the ups and downs of the outing, Gunn stayed level headed and displayed his ability to work out of jams. He was sitting 85-88 with the FB, 72 with the CB, 77-79 with the SL, and 75-76 with the CH. He would compliment this outing with a 2/3 day at the plate. He was able to deliver in the clutch twice with 2 RBI singles, both giving his team the lead at the time of the respective hits.
Gunn took the mound for the Patriots and delivered a dominant outing. He racked up seven strikeouts while allowing just four hits and an unearned run in six innings of work. Despite throwing 101 pitches, Gunn remained in control, attacking the zone with confidence and executing his pitches effectively throughout the game. Gunn featured a lively fastball, sitting 87-89 mph and topping 91, with late arm-side run that he spotted effectively on the inner half. He attacked hitters early in counts with the heater, showing confidence in challenging both righties and lefties to their pull side. His slider (77-80 mph) was a true wipeout pitch, tunneling well off his fastball and generating swings and misses, especially in two-strike counts. It had late, sharp bite, making it difficult for hitters to track out of his hand. His curveball (72-73 mph) played with a classic 12/6 shape, diving late and serving as an effective early-count strike or a chase pitch when needed. One of the most effective weapons in Gunn’s arsenal was his changeup (75-77 mph). He showed great feel for the pitch, throwing it with consistent arm speed, making it difficult for hitters to differentiate from his fastball. The late arm-side fade kept hitters off balance, leading to weak contact and swing-and-miss results, particularly against left-handed batters. He wasn’t afraid to throw it in key situations, using it to disrupt timing and induce soft ground balls. The changeup played a crucial role in his ability to work deep into the game, giving him a true four-pitch mix that made him tough to square up all contest. There were two main takeaways that stood out to me the most with Gunn. He was able to really maintain his composure throughout, working efficiently despite a high pitch count and also, his ability to tunnel his pitches made him especially tough to barrel up, generating swings and misses and weak contact against the entire Mt. Carmel lineup.
