Solid all-around day at the yard for the Dons commit who recorded two hits. Luyben first smoked a line drive single into RCF that started a big 2nd inning for VM. He later added an RBI double down the right field line that put the finishing touches on a 10-run performance for the Broncos in their Southwestern League victory. The senior backstop showed a mature and disciplined approach at the plate, staying within himself, letting the ball travel, and displaying the ability to drive it gap-to-gap with intent. The double came on a pitch out over the plate that he didn’t try to do too much with, showcasing his strong hands and balanced lower half through contact. Defensively, Luyben provided quality innings behind the dish which helped result in a no-hitter for starter Vaughn Neckar. He recorded a consistent 2.00 pop time in between innings, with clean footwork and a quick release that kept the run game honest. He receives the ball well, particularly in the lower half of the zone, and brings vocal leadership to the field, a trait that really stood out to me in-game. Luyben’s versatility to also play 1B adds another layer of value, but his presence behind the plate and advanced bat-to-ball skills make him a steady contributor for the Broncos. With a strong senior campaign underway (.382/.528/.529), he looks poised to bring that same consistency to the college level with the Dons.
