Cerny has been on a comeback trail this spring after a tough junior season, and the talented two-way has shown he is resembling more of the sophomore year pitcher that fronted a Musketeers program that made their way to the SS-D2 title game. I saw him hit early in the spring, but this was my first live look at him back on the mound since the spring of 2025. The most noticeable things for Cerny were the quality of the stuff, the looseness of his arm path, and his ability to throw consistent strikes, which were three points of emphasis in his return to form after the down year in 2025. He attacked primarily with an FB-CHG duo that both play well vs. RHH or LHH hitters and then mixed in an SLD, which flashes potential, but wasn’t as consistent as the FB-CHG in collecting called strikes, whiffs, or soft contact from Scorpion hitters. The FB velocity has been up to 90-91 MPH in short stints, but working in a starter role, Cerny lived at 85-88 with the offering controlling it to both halves of the plate with more arm side life to the shape, and played well down in the zone. His CHG is a true weapon that has deception because of the ability he has to throw it with FB arm speed, selling it early, and then the late fade/tumble in the shape collected whiffs at a high rate and rolled over several GBs to the left side with it. The SLD for Cerny flashes a sharp late break to the glove side, but the consistency of getting it to the location he wants to execute the best version was not there on this day. He threw a few that caused Scorpion hitters to swing over the top, but left a few up and out over the plate that went for hits or loud foul ball contact. With three quality pitches highlighted by an effective duo, improved strike throwing, ticks up in velocity, and life on the arsenal to go with improved confidence on the mound, Cerny is looking like the high-quality left-handed arm he showed early in his high school career. Add in his power RH bat and the potential to add value on the offensive side while fitting into either a starting or leverage relief role at the next level, Cerny should be an in-demand late 2026 grab.
