Entering the game in the 5th, Johnson worked two solid innings out of the pen to keep Vacaville within striking distance. Pitching from a ¾ slot, the junior showcased a solid 4-pitch mix on the way to a final line of 2 IP, 3 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1 ER. Johnson attacked the zone early with his FB, utilizing his 6’ 3”, 200 lbs frame for a high release point, getting a number of called strikes at the top of the zone. Johnson’s breaking ball showcased multiple, distinct shapes, one with a sweeping action and one with more vertical depth. Johnson would rely more on the breaking ball with sweeping action to get called strikes early on in counts, and used both as chase pitches down in the zone late. The junior’s CH was also a weapon against both sides, being used on the outer third against LHH and down and in vs. RHH. With a steady release point and an ability to get down the mound well, Johnson tunnels well and creates trouble for opposing hitters. Johnson’s mechanics slightly differ between the windup and the stretch, with his windup generating more torque in his lower half. With a slight adjustment out of the stretch, I can see Johnson adding more consistent velocity as a starter as he enters his senior year or moving to more of a fireman role out of the bullpen.
