Foster quickly caught my eye with his first warm-up pitch coming out of the pen for Castaic when the ball jumped out his hand with life through the zone. Stepping behind the plate to dive in deeper on the profile for the future MIT righthander it showed very well. He works off a solid present two-pitch mix in his FB/CB which profiles for a north/south attack pattern in how the two tunnel off of each other. His FB is a ride over run offering that lived at 86-89 MPH and touched 90 MPH in his three inning outing while the riding life in the shape collected whiffs above the barrel. The CB for Foster comes in at 74-77 MPH with a vertical shape that can flash tight power downward which will induce chase, but did occasionally hump out of the hand for a softer/loopier shape. I was impressed by the control Foster showed to attack the strike zone with each pitch, but it’s a control over command profile. He picked up seven punchouts over three innings of work with one hit allowed and no walks. The delivery for Foster is controlled in the load and down the mound into foot strike, but there is effort once the arm stroke begins as he throws with high intensity from a shorter arm path with solid present arm speed. It’s not a fluid loose arm path, but Foster does minimize recoil after release even with some spin off to the glove side. Based on the delivery and pitch arsenal Foster would appear to be more of a high leverage reliever (the role he seems to be settled in for Castaic) going forward, but if he can add either an arm side moving CHG or 2-seam shape to his FB or SLD to work to his glove side that third pitch combined with his feel to throw strikes consistently could make him a starter in the future.
