Rancho Bernardo vs. Del Norte

Grey Gusich, RHP/1B, Del Norte, 2025

Going up against a talented lineup like Rancho Bernardo is no easy task and Gusich showed up and rose to the occasion. After surrendering 2 quick runs in the 1st, it appeared RB was going to have a breakout day at the plate but Grey stopped the rally and all of the momentum that the Broncos had created. From the 2nd inning on, he settled in with his 3 pitch mix that consisted of a FB at 82-84 mph, that he consistently attacked with to the glove side and top of the zone. The velocity maintained throughout until he was pulled after 5.2 innings. Tunneling that, was his CB at 68-70 mph that he had great command for through his outing. It had tight vertical break and was consistently inducing ground ball outs for him and hitters never really found an answer for it as he went to it numerous times in any count. He also flashed a SL at 75-77 mph that had somewhat of a cutter shape to it as it had just enough horizontal spin/late bite and change of speed to keep hitters off balance and see a different look in eye sight from his FB. A big take away from Gusich was how patient he was on the mound and how he really controlled the tempo of the game. He worked slow in between pitches and consistently changed up his looks to the plate which played a factor in disrupting a hitter's timing as he racked up 6 strikeouts in the contest. He had emotion after every third out was recorded and it carried right over to the Del Norte offense as they fed off the energy and intensity Gusich provided on the bump. Gusich didn’t just contribute on the mound—he also made an impact at the plate, smashing a double off the wall to straightaway center that knocked in a run for the Nighthawks. At 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, his physicality stands out both as a pitcher and a hitter. After posting a 2.97 ERA over 30.2 innings last season, he has already begun to build off of that as he is 2-0 with a 2.21 ERA in 12.2 innings to start 2025.
