This was my first look at Grayson Boles, and he certainly lived up to the hype. The right-hander displayed advanced poise and mound presence, thriving in a high-pressure environment with scouts and agents filling the stands. Boles sat comfortably at 89–94 MPH with the fastball, showing command to both sides of the plate early in counts. He mixed in a sharp 80–82 MPH slider with late bite and a firm 83–84 MPH changeup that featured quality separation and fade. Over six efficient innings, Boles struck out six, allowed just four hits, and held opposing hitters to a .174 average. He limited baserunners, controlled the running game, and rarely pitched from behind in the count. Most impressively, he maintained velocity and composure deep into his outing, showing no signs of wear. Strong physical profile, a polished three-pitch mix, and the ability to compete under pressure. Boles is one of the more projectable and intriguing arms in the prep circuit. High draft follow.
Boles was on the hill for St. Augustine’s second Western League game against Scripps Ranch. Coming back from being sick and a blister on one of his fingers, Boles looked really good out of the gate. He struck out the side in order in the first inning, showing a good mix of the FB/SL combo he has come to be known for. The FB was spotted consistently on the outer third of the plate and Boles occasionally went to the inside half with ease and intent. The SL was used as a finisher, grabbing at least one strikeout each of looking and chase. It has a late and sharp horizontal break and occasionally gets two-planes of movement with significant vertical break as well. Playing consistently at 80-81 mph in this outing – I have seen it elevated 2-3 mph – the SL comes out of the same slot with consistent arm speed and tunnels well off the FB – especially the inside FB to RHH. Boles held his top range of velocity at 92 mph for the first three innings before having a long layoff due to a big offensive inning before getting back out there. The frame is tall and filled out with quality mass. Boles’ mechanics are consistent and flexible down the hill. There is no doubt that Boles’ velocity will rebound from some minor setbacks and build to the heights it has been (T95 mph in preseason) as he builds on his 2025 campaign with big time Western League matchups in the upcoming weeks.
